JURASSIC PARK was released 32 years ago today. Also, Jurassic Park is a cautionary tale about how you compensate IT staff :P

An image showing the Jurassic Park logo with text below that reads: "The entire fiasco of Jurassic Park could have been avoided by just hiring more than one IT guy."

@sortius @troberts I mean he’s not wrong.

#3101 - Good Science

A comic with five panels.

Panel 1: A woman stands in front of a board with writing on it. She says: "I'm supposed to give you the tools to do good science."

Panel 2: She gestures while two students sit at desks facing her. She says: "But what ARE those tools? Methodology is hard and there are so many ways to get incorrect results. What is the magic ingredient that makes for good science?"

Panel 3:
She is now standing beside the board, which is showing bullet points. She says: "To figure it out, I ran a regression with all the factors people say are important:"

Written on the board is the following:

Outcome variable
- Correct scientific results

Predictors:
- Collaboration
- Skepticism of others’ claims
- Questioning your own beliefs
- Trying to falsify hypotheses
- Checking citations
- Statistical rigor
- Blinded analysis
- Financial disclosure
- Open data

Panel 4: She continues explaining: "The regression says two ingredients are the most crucial: 1) Genuine curiosity about the answer to a question, and 2) Ammonium hydroxide"

Panel 5: A student at a desk responds: "Wait, why did ammonia score so high? How did it even get on the list?" The woman enthusiastically replies, arms raised: "...And now you're doing good science!"

Hidden text: "If you think curiosity without rigor is bad, you should see rigor without curiosity."

Orange writing on a black background. The writing says "You cannot shut down your computer while enemies are nearby."

@sortius yeah that’s part of the surprise. Misogyny is practically part of French culture

@sortius yep, honestly I’m just surprised that it’s actually being taken this seriously

@markjustmark @hacks4pancakes some of my spaces are edge lit, but they’re hardwired fixtures

I feel like my phone is gaslighting me. I just was in the process of unlocking my phone and it vibrated with a notification, but it immediately disappeared and isn’t in the notification history 😒

@nonspecialist @hacks4pancakes technically it is possible but the outlet needs to be a certain distance off the ground and labelled “lighting only” which makes things difficult

@hacks4pancakes there are ways to get it done, but light circuit outlets have some specific requirements that make it incredibly hard

@hacks4pancakes oh yeah, those, we don’t do that here 😂

@hacks4pancakes if you’re referring to US GFCI type outlets, that’s because it’s been a legal requirement for a while here that the whole circuit is protected by an RCD that gives the same ground fault protection
