When I met the tribal elder on Vancouver Island, the 81-year-old Martin told me this story.
Also that he only remembered the words decades later, after he himself had worked in the timber industry - when he had to decide to cut down one of Canada's last remaining rainforests.
Indigenous people, it is often said, are enormously important for the protection of biodiversity...

Some sentences frighten, touch, and immediately lead to a change in thinking. Others need time to unfold their impact. Like the one heard by ten-year-old Moses Martin in the early 1950s. He is rowing with his father in a canoe along an island in western Canada when chainsaws howl and trees fall in the rainforest. The two belong to the Tla-o-qui-aht, an indigenous people group that has cared for nature in the Pacific for generations. Until the loggers arrived...

The first part of the series #tracesofthenaturecrisis: For him, it’s a „magical moment with mother nature”: On some days in summer Mike Kelly leaves the harbor with 20 other boats. 44km/h, wood cracks, and the boat hits the flat water. Then the engine turns silent. Kids, grandmothers, or businessmen throw their fishing rods into the water. For Mike Kelly, the area around Vancouver Island is a treasure.
