Let’s face it - braver, bolder teams would wear the One Love armbands in defiance and take the sanctions, even if it costs them success in the tournament. Some things are more important. Though I’m still hoping for subversion (the captains don’t wear them but EVERY SINGLE OTHER PLAYER AND MANAGER AND TRAINER OUT THERE DOES), I’m not holding my breath. This World Cup is living up to all the anticipated ethical ugliness protesters have been warning about since FIFA gave it to Qatar.
When businesses tell you that doing business with human rights abusers and repressive regimes helps bring about change, the only change they are talking about is the money in their pockets.
A World Cup in Russia didn’t bring about change. An Olympics in Beijing didn’t bring about change. WWE shows in Saudi Arabia haven’t brought about change. Nor have they made us reflect on our own ugly practices at home - many of which are just as bad but better hidden. They’ve just brought wealth to the organisers, sponsors, and players, and helped prop up continuing oppression.
