Hey, just another trans girl studying computer science.

@ahaldorsen @admin oh, and Sup exists, but I haven't heard of any developments since it was announced 2 years ago.

I just found this issue on codeberg codeberg.org/fediverse/fediver which Shoot is not mentioned on :( but there's a few other resources there too. Mostly about MLS

@ahaldorsen Hi! I still don't currently host an instance, but @admin has one, try contacting them for details. I just uploaded some screenshots of my own client to it's repo (github.com/MaddyUnderStars/sho), and there's another client linked in that readme. The Shoot server repo has a `docs` folder with some information, and some other markdown files scattered about. As for other fedi instant messengers, looks like there's this github.com/evanminto/activityp which I've just found now, and Gimli which seems to have stopped development codeberg.org/Moria/Gimli/

Happy to hear any other questions :)

@ujeenator Reading into it more now (specifically github.com/swicg/activitypub-e) and it describes a pretty simple way of doing e2ee which is neat and could probably be done pretty quickly. I'm not sure I'm super into it yet though... I was kind of hoping for an entirely e2ee protocol, rather than just the message content. so that'd be the entire activitypub messages being encrypted instead. It's been a while since I've looked at the various feps regarding this though.

@ujeenator PGP specifically? Not currently. Would love to see some form of e2ee in Shoot though.

Just attempted to use "Google Lens" to parse a QR code. It did a web search for similar images and presented me with a list of images containing QR codes. Horrible future

@7331 e2ee doesn't really exist in AP yet, but lots of people are working on that problem at the moment. once it's more fleshed out I'd love to implement it

@cbleslie No to-do list but absolutely! The last time I was working on it, I was getting avatars and such working. you could help with that as a start? the backend API for it might change a bit though

@mint I actually started the project because I wanted to know if it'd work lol.

People say that AP doesn't work for an instant messenger all the time, but I don't really understand what they mean. What part doesn't work? The format the data is in doesn't really change much. Is it the way messages are delivered that's the problem? All AP specifies in that regard is that actors have an inbox at some address you can discover, and I don't see how that changes much either. It's not really that different to what matrix does, where to my understanding they just send outbound messages as fast as possible to each recipient server, and that's entirely possible in AP too.

I'm sorry I don't really have a better answer for you. I haven't tested this at scale, so I don't know how this particular implementation performs either.

@luana On fedi? Maybe. I think @laxla was working on one before, not sure if she still is

Someday, I will encounter a situation where AGP (Android Google Plugin) makes use of HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) and my brain will break in a novel way

Anyway that's a lot of typing to say I had a bit of free time this morning, and I thought "I'll do some Android dev" and then went "wait before I dev I should see if I can get it to compile" and I could not get it to compile.

welcome to the fediverse! it's easy to get started, just pick one of these 30,000 nation-states you want to swear absolute allegiance and fealty to. you WILL be judged for this decision later. good luck!

There's a kind of command line carcinization where computer people especially Linux people gradually gravitate to command line workflows because especially on Linux there's just too many times you open the GUI tool, get halfway through the task, and then realize the GUI tool can't actually do what you need and you need to start over with the command line version. When this happens enough times you just go to the command line first rather than potentially waste your time

Pleased to announce the launch of Surveillance Watch, an interactive map and resource that documents the hidden connections within the opaque surveillance industry: surveillancewatch.io/

By mapping out the intricate web of surveillance companies, their subsidiaries, partners, and financial backers, we hope to expose the enablers fueling this industry's extensive rights violations, ensuring they cannot evade accountability for being complicit in this abuse.

So cool! A one-pixel-wide font that exploits subpixels.

(Source: reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck)

Three views of a font displaying numbers. In the first, you see stacked coloured pixels, and in the last you see how the colours chosen turn on certain RGB subpixels to turn these into numbers.

Text from what looks like Tumblr:
"btw dating sucks as a concept."
"meeting up with someone with the explicit goal of figuring out whether or not you want a relationship with them spoils the dynamic. it sucks. it's terrible. fall in love with your friends like normal people.
"as expected this one is a hit with the autism website"

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.57 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Added support for listening on UNIX-like sockets.

Don't allow empty polls.

Added support for Markdown-style images (converted to attachments) and strikethrough text.

Added support for incoming Move messages: when received, the new account is followed and the old one is unfollowed.

Incoming EmojiReact messages are internally converted to Like (more proper support will happen eventually).

Blocks are also notified.

Mastodon API: fixed a cache bug when following local users.
