@adamgreenfield

I was thinking that maybe your challenge could ultimately be framed as kind of concern with fetishism, and formulated as a riff on Marx, if one were that way inclined:

It is nothing but the definite social relation between humans themselves which assumes, for them, the fantastic form of a screenless interaction between participants.

Might be a bit of a cheap dig to put it like that, though!

@adamgreenfield
For the rest, I imagine enthusiasts are going to say, personally, we don't like structural inequalities and social domination, and would like to see society evolve away from that stuff. But this is a much more modest project, if anything either a small contribution to that evolution, or at least neutral, neither aiding nor hindering it.

And for my part I'm still curious to understand better how you think, if I'm right that the you, that the modest project actively furthers inequality and domination.

Then there's your point about more computation: I suspect Victor would say he's also trying to reduce the amount of computation going around! All the stuff about eye contact and hands and objects.

@adamgreenfield
That's probably a big enough ask. Judging by the videos and Victor's site, the milieu already seem to credit itself with some social sophistication. But it's in a different location to the one you're interested in; like you say --- granular.

@adamgreenfield
Basically my questions boil down to: can you imagine that the issues you have in mind can be resolved by making the tech better, or do we instead have to make the social context better?

Is that even the right dichotomy?

The appealing promise of sociality in Dynamicland’s computational public space is undermined — at least so far as I can perceive, in the materials available to me — by the lack of a robust theory of the public. It offers an idealized kind of small-group interactivity, in an equally idealized setting (a tidy, well-lit room with no conflict). It sidesteps any question of antagonism, exclusion, contestation or mess. The “public” we see here is effectively homogeneous, polite and zero-stakes.

@adamgreenfield
Why are you particularly interested in the thoughts of the people developing dynamicland?

You feel like the design of the thing might go in different directions if they were thinking more about the limits of informational habermasianism?

Is it about asking where might this tech go if it moved towards (your term) the 'social structuring of information'?

Assuming so, how could we dwell with that question a bit longer?

OK, then like the man says: pull up your cushions, and whatever else you have with you that makes life bearable in Texas...’cause this is going to go on for awhile.

Our text here is going to be a video from Dynamicland called “Computational Public Space” that’s been making the rounds lately. Here it is again, if you haven’t seen it: dynamicland.org/2024/Computati

It’s been getting a lot of accolades, tending toward jaw-on-the-floor *whoah*, and I wanted to explain why I can’t quite affirm it fully.

@netblocks
That last point is interesting. I’d noticed the ‘normalized’ label and was wondering about how you calculate what counts as 100%. Perhaps a small print caveat or explanation on the graphic itself wouldn’t go astray.

⚠️ Update: It has now been 24 hours since the Strip fell largely offline. The Palestinian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority attributes the outage to the targeting of the last remaining main fiber optic route, with repair efforts hindered 📉

Graph from NetBlocks showing network connectivity by region in Palestine from June 6, 2025, to June 12, 2025. The y-axis represents normalized connectivity, ranging from 0% to 100%, and the x-axis represents the dates. The green line representing operator Paltel's (AS12975) connectivity remains stable at around 100% throughout most of the time period, with a sharp drop on June 10 and a second sharp drop on the night of June 11, caused by a cut in one of the main routes due to ongoing aggression. The minimum and current connectivity levels are indicated as 13% and 13%, respectively. The chart has a dark background with two orange vertical arrows labeled 'NORTHERN GAZA' and 'CENTRAL & SOUTHERN GAZA explains the two sharp drops.

So beginnt Majas Hungerstreikerklärung.
basc.news/hungerstreikerklaeru

I'm offering a VPCZ1-compatible SSD (or cooked dinner / a translation / money) in exchange for the chance to save the data on the SSD.
