Sharing the fourth and final paper of my #PhD: 'Urban biodiversity and adolescent mental health and well-being'. Published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology #JEVP.

We did not find an association between good access to biodiverse green spaces and adolescent mental health and well-being in London. But limitations, especially regarding our measure of exposure, need to be considered!

Here is the paper:

Even if you took away the waves, the ocean surface would not be flat.  That’s partly because Earth’s gravity varies across the surface, pulling water around and creating huge lumps and holes up to 100m high/deep. But then temperature, salinity, atmospheric pressure and currents add extra dynamic bumps on top of this of a few tens of cm.  Tracking these lets us measure ocean currents from satellites, which is an astonishing feat.

I've just released a new version of the {rmapshaper} 📦 on CRAN. This is a fairly major release, with lots of changes under the hood, but minimal user-facing changes:

Please give it a test drive and report any issues at github.com/ateucher/rmapshaper

A systematic review preregistration template is now available on OSF, the first of several community-developed templates to be added.

Key contributions from Olmo van den Akker and @matherion in conceiving the template, and
@katiecorker getting it included.

Traditionally, research in ‘the wild’ is considered exploratory and descriptive with marginal bearing on
theory development. Research in ‘the lab’ is considered as confirmatory and capable of testing theories.
In lab research, stimuli are simplified and controlled, so the effects can be isolated to the particular
aspects of the stimuli and/or task. Here, we illustrate how an ‘Ecobrain’ approach moves beyond this
distinction to a cyclic research process in which real-world phenomena are identified and studied both in
the real-world (left) and in the lab (right). Real-world research, with the use of mobile technologies for
continuous recording of behavioural, physiological and neural activity, combined with data-driven
modelling approaches, allows for identification of key environmental variables and for prediction of
behavioural, physiological and neural responses. The lab, supplemented with technologies that allow for
control of environmental variables...

By the way, I realized why so many people like podcasting. You set aside some time every other week for an in depth, well prepared conversation with another well-prepared person you enjoy talking to. This is the kind of thing in a busy academic life you cut out of a workweek when there are too many other more immediate deadlines. But with a podcast this fun activity becomes something you commit to and won't let it be pushed aside by a manuscript review deadline. I like it.

Properly jaw-dropping moment this evening: an e-mail from my US publisher saying that "since it's a science book", they'll publish Blue Machine WITH METRIC UNITS. So I don't have to convert everything to foot pounds per square elephant. In YEARS of writing for the US, this is the first time I have ever had a hint that there is a world outside feet and inches. Progress! #Books #Metric #Science

Hey IJCAI are you on here? This is a really rude paper reviewing score classification.

I once received a review of a paper (another conference) in which the reviewer stated that my paper should not have been written and that no one should work on the research I was working on. As a pre-tenure assistant professor it was devastating at the time.

Don't do this to authors. Don't make it easy for reviewers to do this to authors.

Score:

Extremely strong reject: this paper should not have been written.

I've been on Mastodon for 3 months now, so have been reflecting..

one totally unexpected experience has been seeing some accounts that I thought of as valuable on Twitter move to Mastodon and suddenly strike me as somewhat toxic:

contra to the (supposedly widespread and deeply ingrained) "fundamental attribution error" it seems I attributed certain types of responses wholly to the toxic platform (environment), not the individuals

is that a thing? a by-content interaction for this "bias"?
