@b0rk mine are different... and I don't know why đ
You all KNOW you want to work with
@thatandromeda and this is your chance to join our team!
We're seeking a software engineer who likes thinking through data pipelines and helping transfer students to succeed in their degree journeys: https://www.ithaka.org/job/4445169005/?gh_jid=4445169005
I've had a blast working and learning at ITHAKA and I can't recommend it highly enough. Hit me up with any questions you have - this is a great role for a data engineer to grow in.
Hi! Do you like building data pipelines? Are you motivated by helping transfer students succeed in higher ed? Would you like to work with me, like literally on my project team, in the same sprint meetings? It is your lucky day: https://www.ithaka.org/job/4445169005/
(If I am *personally* familiar with you/your work, I can hook you up with a referral link, which you should use instead; let's chat.)
Itâs common to warn against prematurely optimizing early-stage web apps, with the mantra that you arenât gonna need it. This is duality correct advice. But the other week at constellate.org we ran into a case where yeah, actually we did need to redesign something because of scaling issues! http://matthewlincoln.net/2024/05/05/elasticsearch-slow-aggregations.html
@thatandromeda in Codd we trust
updating our system architecture diagrams, erring on the side of honesty
Right after I agreed with the students that I was very lucky to have such a great job we discovered a live bug that I had to scoop up and save for the Preservation Librarian and I heard one of them say âI knew there had to be a catch.â
An article on the JSTOR Access in Prisons initiative, and my firecracker coworker Stacy Burnett who makes so much of it happen: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/students/academics/2024/03/01/jstor-expands-access-incarcerated-students Normal people would look at the extreme technical and process barriers to this and quail; she's just like, sure why *not* roll this out to a million people.
@mebrett the code4lib.slack.com is also an awesome resource for python / ruby / API learners as well! Probably a great second step after doing some starting API practice on the other resources in this thread - folks there will be able to talk more about ASpace-specific things. And they're super welcoming!
Hiiiii! Are you into JavaScript? Do you want to be my coworker (like, literally on my team)? It is your lucky day! https://www.ithaka.org/job/4366911005/
I'm happy to answer questions about working here, JSTOR Labs, ITHAKA, etc. (tl;dr I like it.) If I'm familiar with your work I might be able to refer you -- talk to me about that before you apply.
I'm hiring! JSTOR Labs is looking for a new frontend software engineer to work on exciting platforms like Constellate, where we help people learn and teach text and data analysis. I may be biased, but Labs has been an amazing place to work and grow these past two years, so I can't recommend it highly enough!
If Plato comes out of his cave and sees his shadow we'll have 4 more months of perceptual imprisonment
@anarchivist @platypus @thatandromeda @wynkenhimself I gotta jump on the lifting-for-occupational-fitness train - itâs wild how good some regular exercise of my core and back stabilizers dramatically improves all kinds of sitting-related pains. And then thereâs the whole endorphins aspect, which doesnât hurt!
well, now that the initial sting has died down, i can say i was let go along with 3 others from MPOW and am looking for a new job. the short version
* seattle/remote only; happy to travel for work occasionally
* fairly versatile in the right tech settings (EM, product management, project management, program management)
* kind of interested in seeking out dev rel/community management type roles these days
* consulting is not preferable at this time
* would like to go back to LAMs for the right job, but not interested in ascending to library administration
I clearly have had more difficulty blogging as my work transitions to bigger and bigger projects. It probably wonât be any easier this year, but Iâm going to try to be better https://matthewlincoln.net/2024/01/27/managing.html
