Google AI mistakenly says fatal Air India crash involved Airbus instead of Boeing
Google's disclaimer says AI "may include mistakes," which is an understatement.

A happy programmer is a productive programmer. That's why we optimize for happiness and you should too. Don't just pick tools and practices based on industry standards or performance metrics. Look at the intangibles: Is there passion, pride, and craftmanship here? Would you truly be happy working in this environment eight hours a day?

@cR0w @jerry Having a bug reporting system != being a CNA. They became one March 2025. They're trying to make CVEs about perl better than MITRE 's half baked effort over the last few decades. I know they're trying to take ownership of old records too to actually be able to update them and make them more accurate.

There are lots of frustrations around CVE, but volunteers getting involved to make CVEs actually useful is the only way it gets better for all of us, even if there will be mistakes along the way.

2025-06-12

@cR0w @jerry from the linked bug report I think maybe it just went unnoticed for a few years after the original report (still bad, just different). I don't think they should have published a new CVE since it seems to just be about the old CVEs, but IIRC cpan is a newer CNA so they probably just need help getting on their feet.

digging around in my 2K Marin-era (2008-ish) archives and came across this outstanding error message, props to whatever IT(?) person decided to phrase a simple seat license conflict as "Human Combat Required":

windows 98 style message box with titlebar text "Human Combat Required", message text: "The human at "NOVW-SGUTIERREZ" is attempting to use your license. To satisfy honor, you must defeat this human in physical combat! Failing that, you must obtain a new license."
standard windows "OK" button below.

Using just the values we *know*, that works out to about 155t CO₂e, which is about 55 flights from London to New York. If my suspicions are correct and it's really 3 orders of magnitude higher, that's a _lot_ of CO₂ saved -- and Passim seems to be worth all that extra hassle.

Use `passim status` if you want to see what it's doing on your machine and see github.com/hughsie/passim for more information on how it works.

When you pitch your product at me as "stop making meeting notes manually" what I hear is "stop thinking in the meeting".

@da_667 do you set the default search domains on your network to include the kaidacorp.local? That should resolve with just the host in any browser, as well as any other tools too.

2025-05-30

@da_667 honestly, with the amount of weird lab structures you have it might be worth it to set up bgp. Then you never have to remember any weird setup steps and replicate it on a new machine or god forbid roll out a change across a bunch of devices.

I know I know, no ospf probably includes this too, but I ended up going this route with my pfsense as well and it's been nice to set up once and never think about again. Everything just routes.

If your industry (AI) can only exist by ripping the work of others without credit, then it shouldn't exist.

The big companies are just steamrolling over the rights of everyone because they're getting away with it. Governments have been cowardly to act on this.

The former Meta executive claims that a law requiring tech companies to ask permission to train AI on copyrighted work would ‘kill’ the industry"

Right to Repair is winning.

Legislators are listening. Consumers are demanding better. And smart companies are starting to get on board.

But we won’t stop until you can fix everything you own. Without tricks. Without delays. Without permission.

Let’s keep going.

PSA: If you want to test updating your UEFI KEK before everyone else, you can do `fwupdmgr enable-remote lvfs-testing` and then `fwupdmgr update` -- not all vendors are uploaded yet, and the CDN is still syncing -- so it might be a few hours before they're all visible.

See fwupd.github.io/libfwupdplugin for more details. The UEFI db update that uses the KEK update will follow soon. You also need fwupd 2.0.9 -- which is kinda new -- but now available in Fedora 42 if that helps.
