@Rycaut @xian I'm going to test that now.

@stux you are an amazing host. Thank you a million! My sense is this instance is big and somewhat burdened so I am about to migrate this account to indieweb.social -- see you on the flip side and I will always love mstdn,.social, my first home in the fediverse!

@lio I guess it's some sort of trusted protocol between the two instances? I am going to try it!

@lukasb @xian I keep hearing this but I still don't understand how that would work

Big rumblings in the expansion of the #Fediverse have been happening recently.

#Tumblr has already promised to implement #ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses), which will mean you can follow Tumblr accounts from here and vice versa. And today we a learning that #Flickr is also considering it!

This will be a massive expansion, which obviously carries some uncertainties, but I, for one, welcome our new federation partners.

This is the way the internet is supposed to work.

@enron @xian how do people following you get moved?

I do not understand the process.

@dwenius @xian right but an existing follower of the old account, do they stop seeing your posts until they stumble on your profile, realize you’ve moved, and re-follow you?

@Rycaut @xian thanks but I fully get that followers don’t have to be on the same instance. i follow people now not on my insurance and vice versa.

I am asking how a follower of the old account becomes a follower of the new account.

@lio @xian yes but it can’t be you can just upload any csv and force people to follow you? my understanding is your followers, if they go to your profile, will see that you’ve moved and will have the opportunity to follow your new handle, but maybe i’m missing something.

I will do a test with my new smaller accounts, seeing what happens if I migrate from one to the other….

@yoyobeatty @xian thanks but i extremely know this part and it doesn’t explain how followers of the old account become followers of the new one…

A belated introduction post:
Hiya!
I mainly post about work-related topics, mostly Product Management.

I'm a recovering music journalist & Head of Product - but now spend my days as a freelance Coach, Consultant, Community developer & Public speaker.

I co-host Mind the Product's podcast, and facilitate 2 monthly virtual lean coffee meetups for product people and coaches. Links for all in my bio - would love to see you there.

[WHITE PEOPLE DO NOT REPLY]
if you can't read you're getting blocked

I'm glad we're starting to have a wider conversation surrounding racism and especially anti-Blackness on the Fedi.

But I feel like a lot of it could be better.

I see a lot of white people partaking in the conversation in a way that derails it, centering themselves and their experiences, explaining racism to POCs, and the like.

So please, if you are not Black, don't have conversations with Black folks about anti-Blackness.

However, do call out your friends on their racist bullshit. Do not wait for us to point it out. I don't want to be the only one to say that shit is not okay. It must come from you people as well.

I would also appreciate if you boosted posts made BY POCs rather than by white people. I see a lot of this stuff. It signals that you don't value our feelings and opinions but rather our oppressors' opinions on our struggles

I would also like non-Black admins to take a stand on anti-Black racism by not just suspending racist accounts on their own instances, but also by defederating from pro-cop, anti-Black and generally racist servers.

@davglass I found that instance.name/explore tends to have that info, when you're logged out (or incognito)...

Right now I have that proverbial kerchief tied to a stick over my shoulder as I try to figure out where is the best place to plant my hobo feet in the Fediverse. I have been thinking about the type of community I'd like to be rooted in (and even what is a nice looking handle), and now I'm trying to figure out what is the best scale.

Too big is clearly a problem with noise, lack of focus, moderation scaling issues, and potential de-federation (mastodon.social seems perpetually problematic).

Too small may make the local feed less interesting than otherwise, but I don't spend a lot of time outside of my home feed so far, tbh, as I follow a lot of cool folks already (over on my current primary, @mediajunkie) and they share and reboost lots of great stuff, etc. So not sure what size is best, but here are some thoughts around my choices:

For comparison:
- the flagship .social (as I hear it's called) has 247k users last time I checked.
- My current instance, mstdn.social = 80k
- indieweb.social, a very cool instance that just let me join = 6.5k
- tilde.zone, right here = 2.9k
- and xoxo.zone, another very special community = 344 users

What I need to explore now is whether any of this makes a difference in my experience, and then if I change my primary location I'll have to try to herd my followers to it, I suppose?

is there any easy way to see how many users are on a particular instance?

@73rdnemesio @mediajunkie @palafo You can follow hashtags?! I’m going to have to look for that when I get the chance.

If the Twitter fiasco has shown us anything, it is the importance of a product lead.

@dreasaez He's demonstrating en masse one of the classic "bad PM" stereotypes I've encountered in my career a few times - someone who thinks the role is mainly engineering management, and uses their out of date technical knowledge to be a tyrant to their team.
