Meg

I like video games, programming languages, and hacking things up with old video game hardware. I also post a lot about TV I'm watching, and sometimes books I'm reading too.

At my day job I hack on dev tools for a moonshot operating system, and I think Plan 9 is cool. I've also worked on social networks, streaming, and low level network software in the past at companies big and small.

Used to stream on twitch (as megmactv) but don't really anymore.

Anything I say here is 1000% my own opinion and probably no one, including any employers I have or have had in the past agree with me.

Most computer programmers I've known, myself included, develop a philosophy about computers that is a peculiar hybrid of atheism ("there are no gods and if there ever were then either they've abandoned us or we killed them") with some kind of mysticism ("shit's haunted, time for cleansing rituals") or a Shinto-style belief in machine spirits. It's always tongue-in-cheek, except when it isn't, and I think it's fascinating

After some extended discussion with the rest of the Treehouse moderation team, as well as extended discussion with Gina, the new owner of fosstodon, we are planning to take incremental steps that will result in full defederation of fosstodon from Treehouse.

Fosstodon has been a consistent moderation headache for our team for years, initially because of the same problems we have seen from many of the tech instances: drive-by snippy and unhelpful comments like "oh YOU wouldn't be having that problem if you just used GNU/Linux instead!"

In the past year or so, however, things have changed in the nature of the moderation issues we have seen from Fosstodon. While the "reply guy" behaviour is still present, the overall temperature has shifted in the direction of the alt-right, both in terms of moderation incidents and, as recently seen, staffing incidents.

Gina has outlined her philosophy regarding the management of Fosstodon and its role in the greater fediverse, however this blog does not address any of the specific problems we, and our users, have observed from their community.

We are increasingly unconvinced that the situation will improve in any meaningful way, so we conclude that defederation is the only option. These conclusions are always disappointing, but as a community of queer hackers, these decisions are necessary to protect the psychological safety of our local Treehouse community.

As we begin to bring our federated relationship with Fosstodon to a close, we encourage our local community to be thoughtful and kind in regard to their frustrations with the Fosstodon community.

To help with continuity, instead of immediate defederation, Fosstodon will be upgraded to a full limit with report suppression in a few hours following this announcement. This will allow local users to continue to interact with Fosstodon users that they explicitly consent to interacting with while they make the transition to a new instance, and allows for reversal if Fosstodon commits to acceptable management practices which we have already outlined in our discussions with Gina.

In the event that nothing meaningfully changes, Fosstodon will then be fully defederated on July 1.

I suspect in a couple years there's gonna be a shift in the tone of Star Wars stuff towards much more dour and dark content because when something like Andor comes along, it's almost inevitable that corporate interests will completely miss that Andor (and Rogue One before it) wasn't depressing, it was a hopeful rock bottom. It only really works because we know what's next.

But they won't get that. Like don't get me wrong the creatives will, mostly. But they don't decide what gets the $$$.

@AmeliasBrain the trick with the rentals is to get the passes. On lime, a valid for 3 days 60 minute pass costs about as much as a single 10-15 minute ride without one ime.

@ariadne I dunno it wouldn't shock me if he was secretly the worst kind of brony...

I find it so weird how people think balancing on a(n e-) scooter is really hard. Often people who are fine riding a bike will look at scooters with some level of terror and like.. am I just weird? Balancing on a scooter is way easier than on a bike!

You just stand on it? If something starts going awry your legs and feet are free to do what's necessary to recover or escape. And while it's in motion it's largely self-stabilizing, just like a bike.

Anyone have any experience writing command line utilities in Rust to interact with Mastodon/the Fediverse?

@Albertan_AlbertAn it is true that in the before times pride in Edmonton was kinda notorious for having erratic weather, but at least up here I don't really feel like August or September are much better heh.

Also I dunno for me I feel like there's something metaphorically special about doing it close to solstice rather than when the days start getting noticeably shorter.

Looking up the history I guess that's a new thing since the old pride organization died to self-inflicted cop-loving, and it was in early June before. I should know that, having been to it many times before that, but in my defense that was a million years ago.

Also I got confused because Calgary's Pride festival and parade have been in September (wtf why) since 2009 and I definitely remembered that one or the other or both was in a weird month.

I wish Pride in Edmonton weren't weirdly divided between the actual Pride month and the Stonewall anniversary in June and the local festival/parade in August. And only partly because it annoys me that the festival overlaps with the Fringe.

And anyways if we are going to have Pride on a different day/month why not a date with local historical relevance like May 30th? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisces_B

@robyn my annoyance is all the different kinds of PM.

Also interesting that it's being released both weekly on tv *and* as a binge online.

Adults is a wild show. I've never seen a tv show so stuffed to the brim with second hand embarrassment.

.. and somehow it kinda works for me? I dunno what to make of that lol
