@ceejbot Yeah this has been my world for the last 6 or 7 years: Make sure everyone has a good balance of work and then...surprise!...something big and urgent that wasn't anticipated.

@scott Biggest problem in my SF neighborhood is consistantly watering the newly planted trees :(

@swetland This reminds me of the era when your JVM at Danger didn't have float support. (I remember spending a plane flight coming back from GSM testing writing a decimal floating point library so we could have a calculator app)

@profdc9 No doubt. And when it becomes impossible for me to reach people who have chosen Microsoft as their provider if I am not a longstanding Microsoft user, there's no FCC or anyone to intervene.

A month ago, I was trying to reach out to folks via email who knew my mom in preparation for a Celebration of Life for her passing. I found out that my email from my Google Workspace vanity domain to outlook.com and msn.com addresses was going to spam, even though I had DKIM et al. Same with a gmail account I'd long had! Same with an outlook.com account I'd long had (but never emailed from)! A friend who worked at MSFT filed a ticket that went nowhere.

Was it this?

I'm here live this morning in Glenview, IL where we expect this I-beam to reanimate. We expect the old 8 storey headquarters of Zenith Electronics -- the inventor of the TV remote -- to magically reappear as our economy suddenly moves 50 years back in time.

@rands :) ...but it was originally "Orchard Place", hence 'ORD'.

@c0debabe What happens when one of the transformers fails catastrophically? Or does that not happen anymore?

2025-01-27

@profdc9 Kinda like a whole bunch of stuff that seemed transgressive but in retrospect was pretty bleak. We weren't alone there.

2025-01-27

@profdc9 Prolly GinsuTalk did :)

I agree that scaled social communication seems like a poor idea. For BBS's, we all had to wait our turn as our autodialers found a gap in the busy signals.

@profdc9 You've had a rough hand dealt you, Dan. You hang in there.

2025-01-19

@profdc9 @jwz Pls don't leave Dan!

My friend from college and countless adventures since, Louise, sadly lost her Altadena house in the Eaton fire. It was a beautiful place with a treehouse, a chicken coop and wooden kayaks she had assembled. Please consider helping her and her son!

@swetland BTW I greatly enjoyed Frieren (and so did my daughter) so thank you for leading me there.

One thing I keep wondering: What's the Japanese cultural take on D&D? It seems like the things that D&D was built on, and the things that Frieren was built on, are heavily Western. Do they connect in Japan? How did Frieren come to be? (Not necessarily asking you of course, just sharing something that's mysterious to me)

FWIW, Frieren seems clearly autistic to me, and I gather I'm not alone.

@webuiltthiscity Hey since you might know, I just noticed that the San Ramon Way gate between Westwood Park and the CCSF reservoir is open (at least enough for a pedestrian), perhaps unintentionally. It's been years since I've been that way. I am hopeful it lasts. Do you know how long it's been like that?

@swetland I really wanted a modern version of this game for my kids

@jwz I imagine that's illegal in Europe, not that it matters. Would be good if it were illegal here too, for what its worth...

When working on international handles for YouTube, I mentioned that (as far as I was aware), there was no RFC or w3c spec or anything for linkification of text (and btw no one linkifies i18n URLs) in the presence of Mark Davis.

And now there's this draft!

@chrisisgr8 kinda bet T Mobile owns the brand, MSFT owns the rest.
