"You can tell what happened — Google promised iNaturalist free money if they would just do something, anything, that had some generative AI in it. iNaturalist forgot why people contribute at all, and took the cash."
(Original title: Google bribes iNaturalist to use generative AI — volunteers quit in outrage)
So if you're perimenopausal and finding yourself forgetting things, your brain feels like it's wrapped in cotton wool, or feeling angry and sad all at once... it's all very normal, and you are *definitely* not alone!
Is there a name for the existential and physical agony one experiences when hearing "we prepared a Miro board"?
"Even though Google is fundamentally a spyware advertising company (some 80% of its revenue is advertising; the proportion was even higher back then), we Engineers were kept carefully away from that reality, as much as meat eaters are kept away from videos of the meat industry: don't think about it, just enjoy your steak."
20 years later, still not a single program can beat #Winamp at music playing. Damn, I miss Winamp.
This is completely bonkers. And at the same time it contains a very good explanation what a webserver is.
Where do bad rainbows go?
They go to prism.
It's a light sentence, but it gives them time to reflect.
@piko I feel you 😂

25 years ago, I bought this WAY TOO EXPENSIVE stereo that I own to this day. It still works.
I just found the service manual. It is very bad quality (looks like a scan of a fax!) but LOOK AT THIS DIAGRAM!
I wrote a program to lipsync the shipping forecast in a terminal window, and I have no regrets.
Announcing: https://justaqrcode.com.
Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.
My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

Fun new paper at #SIGGRAPH2025:
What if instead of two 6-sided dice, you could roll a single "funky-shaped" die that gives the same statistics (e.g, 7 is twice as likely as 4 or 10).
Or make fair dice in any shape—e.g., dragons rather than cubes?
That's exactly what we do!
