Just another geek of the software development variety. Fan of open source operating systems (primarily Debian GNU/Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD), over-engineered self hosting, homelabs, retro gaming and home automation. Collector of vintage Unix workstations.

Taking a very long break from social media so mostly read-only at the moment, but that may change at some point...

XScreenSaver 6.11 is out now. This is a Unix-only release -- this version contains preliminary support for Wayland.

This is maybe not entirely ready for prime time, but I figured I'd get it out there so that some people who actually understand Wayland can poke at it...

@stefano Indeed. I should have guessed that you're familiar with it :)

2025-06-30

@stefano Not as smooth to install (as it's not supported out the box by most distros), but I find ZFSBootMenu (typically in conjunction with rEFInd) works incredibly well for Linux ZFS-on-root. docs.zfsbootmenu.org/en/v3.0.x

@ssamulczyk You're welcome. I normally use Kodi (with Jellyfin plugin) as frontend but do have an Apple TV in one room and use Infuse there. It works very well.

2025-06-30

@ssamulczyk If you don't mind using a non-open source client (and paying for certain features), Infuse is a good option. firecore.com/infuse. It has very good support for #Jellyfin.

Right now, being a Canadian is so awkward in the USA.

I was playing this FPS on my Steam Deck, when this random guy asks me, “Does playing these games ever create in you the urge to be violent?”

And I tell him, “I’ve been playing Doom for 35 years. Not once have I felt the urge to buy a gun, shoot a gun, or shoot anything with a gun. In fact, I don’t believe in guns—and think they’re evil.”

“Wait a second,” this guy tells me, “That’s twisted. You’re telling me if someone came to your house at night and attacked your family, you wouldn’t want a gun?”

“I’m from Canada,” I respond, “Handguns are illegal. If you’re found with one, that’s a crime. If you commit a felony with a gun, that’s more time added on when you go to prison.”

“Canada, eh?” he says, shakes his head—walks away as though I said something truly heinous.

I should probably shut up. One more day.

New blog post!

I describe how I'm using the snapshot feature of ZFS to track daily changes in my home directory on FreeBSD. This enables me to do things like restore files accidentally deleted and make backups to remote devices.

I have quickly come to appreciate how useful snapshots can be:

@dwarmstrong Thanks, useful post - I hadn't thought of the useful scenario of allowing a user to create snapshots of their home directory filesystem, etc.

BTW, I find sanoid very useful for automating #ZFS snapshots - freebsdfoundation.org/blog/zfs

@an0key Urgh. Mine isn't yet forcing an account - I've had the warning to create one for months but am still able to update. I'm eventually going to migrate to the Zigbee stick I use for everything else but don't fancy the hassle of re-pairing just yet...

@dwarmstrong USFF machines are awesome. @servethehome has some great resources on those Lenovos and similar from Dell, etc - servethehome.com/introducing-p

@zekjur Makes sense (didn't realise you were a #NetBSD user for a while!) :)

2025-06-21

@zekjur Have you looked at #pkgsrc? I've found it to work really well on macOS. Binary packages are available here: pkgsrc.smartos.org/install-on- (courtesy of @jperkin).

That said, if you're already partway through a switch to #nix...

@kel Yeah, also always took "Used to Love Her" as satire...

BTW, when I was at school a friend had a copy of AfD with the original cover - when he showed it to me I was surprised as I didn't realise that the cross wasn't the original cover (this was 1988, remember!).

2025-06-20

@ChartreuseK @CursedSilicon @fozztexx Ah, very cool - thanks for the info.

2025-06-20

@kel Agreed. I think we've all done and said things we regret, it's how we make amends for those things that are important.

I remember the controversy about Lies at the time and I believe "One in a Million" was later dropped from re-releases. "Used to Love Her" should probably be consigned to the graveyard too...

2025-06-20

@kel @kel It's a hard one, I know some make the argument of "separating art from artist" but I'm not so sure about that personally...

FWIW, GnR had a *huge* impact on my musical tastes at the time of the release of AfD - I went from being a huge pop (think: Michael Jackson) fan to discovering Metallica, Megadeth, Rush, Slayer, etc.

2025-06-20

@ChartreuseK @CursedSilicon Lovely monitor :) Where is the post on the screen from?

2025-06-17

@nuintari We quite enjoyed Paradise recently and have been catching up on a few older shows: True Detective, The Sinner and Fargo.
