I think that fact that we're using AI to write emails because we find it hard and AI to summarise emails because we can't be bothered to read them suggests that we should take a look at how we communicate rather than boiling the oceans to have LLMs hallucinate at each other on our behalf.

Unlike actual clouds, which transport life-giving moisture from the seas to the land, the AI cloud sucks up scarce water resources. It shouldn't be called 'The Cloud' it should be called 'The Drought', and we should say "that large language model runs in The Drought" 🏜️

To give you an idea of how inefficient the state of the art in machine learning is, imagine that, in order to train a less-than-competent sales representative for your business, they first have to read every book ever written.

To be fair—it never did. No visual media has ever actually represented reality.

From the way we stop our lives to pose for them (Mike Birbiglia has a great standup bit about this) to framing, angles, captions, etc, photographs have always been capable of bending the truth even before Photoshop was invented. That is part of what makes it so difficult to label “real” vs “AI” because AI was never the reason you should be questioning photos.
