@autisticbookclub @bookstodon you may also want to check local juvenile halls, prisons, and women’s shelters for what their book donation policy is. Those places, in my experience, are always in need of new (used) books.

@mashbooq thank you
@jbbeal thank you!
@Nolasox thank you!!
@Nolasox ok thank you! Any idea how I do that? (I’m sure I can google it so if it’s annoying to explain don’t worry about it; I’m just very very lazy)
@estebanmoro be interesting to see what happens after the trump announcement
Do I need to change from this server (picked at random) for something writing/journalism related? Like if I want writing/journalism people who don’t currently follow me to see something I post?
Also why do people call it the Fediverse?
(These are unrelated questions other than that they’re both things about this website I don’t know)
Sharing this piece from @ct_bergstrom on the importance but peril of science communication the past few years. This is where I think #mastodon could hopefully provide that soft reset of the mounting toxicity in engaging in a constructive way that benefits everyone. A must read for all.

@jcheroske not at all! you make good points and if i didn't have a job that was SO dependent on my stories finding new eyeballs, i'd probably stick with masto only. but i could see one being better for, say, promoting stories and another (likely this one) for actually engaging with interesting humans (like you!)
@jcheroske i totally get that and i have no intention of abandoning mastodon. but i am also interested in seeing how new social media sites work. I'm not a fan of tiktok, FB, insta, and now twitter. as someone whose job it is to try to reach a broad audience, I'm open to different models and would really like to find more than one i don't actively hate.
idk if anyone here is also interested in trying #POST, which is supposed to be similar to both the bird app and also mastodon. I'm on a waiting list to get in bc it's still in beta, but if you use my lil code here https://post.news/?r=sPfK5 to get on the waitlist yourself, i get bumped up on the list, which would be great news for me because i have absolutely no life whatsoever. as a thank you for suffering through this obnoxious toot, here is a very cute picture of my dog
Do I have to learn what an instance is I don’t want to I’m lazy and dumb
ever wondered what a goat's face looks like when it's about to get a treat? probably not but these two made me laugh when i was feeding them, so here you go anyway #fridaygoats #goats
Hello new people! 👋
If you need help getting started on Mastodon, have a look at:
It's written in non-technical language, it's a beginner's guide.
If you can't find the answers you want on the site, @ me or message me.
One thing that's getting a little lost in this mix, is that some of the people desperately holding on at Twitter are because they are trapped by either healthcare or visas.
That there are systemic traps that trap workers in America so they feel unable to move freely to new employers who want them and would have better pay or conditions is *nuts* and deserves a lot more attention than it gets.
PLEASE, please donate to the Mississippi Free Press if you can before the Bird App dies.
Twitter users are the biggest source of support for our nonprofit newsroom and we're concerned about what happens if Twitter dies.
So please give at http://mfp.ms/donate now if you can.
How I'm beginning to feel about Twitter and Meta:
“You know, when I was a girl, the idea that the British Empire could ever end was absolutely inconceivable. And it just disappeared, like all the other empires.” — Doris Lessing
The physicist Chandra Prescott-Weinstein was subject to racist and anti-semitic attacks on Mastodon last week. If this site is going to tolerate this kind of hate, I am outta here.
There's a good chance your at-home Covid-19 tests are past the expiration date on the box. Don't toss them; they're good well past that date. Here's why the expiration date is wrong and how to tell if yours is still good

I see quite a lot of #Science posts expressing concern if The Public will follow their authors' #TwitterMigration over on here.
Here's the thing: they don't even have to. Every #Mastodon account has an #RSS feed. For example, here's mine:
https://mstdn.social/@rysiek.rss
Every hashtag has an RSS feed as well (as seen from a given instance), for example:
https://mstdn.social/tags/Science.rss
Your audiences can follow you without ever setting up an account on fedi, with any RSS reader.
