ok, time to migrate to my new server! New account is: @Andrew
I already have the alias set over there, so now it's time to try the forwarding from here. 🤞

@rodneygrim Well if there's a vehicle next to you it's 2 lanes, and if you're driving in the middle it's 1 lane. Simple! 😅 But in all seriousness, I don't really mind the unofficial extra lanes that appear during rush hour. Certainly lower priority than addressing jobs, education, housing, and the related drugs and violence problems... I hope he takes some real action.

@cheeaun Assuming the shadow projections are decently accurate, you could instantly optimize solar panel placement, taking into account shadows from neighboring buildings throughout the year. Plus this just looks cool!

When a progressive mayor is said to have failed to “deal with crime,” the media acts like it’s only natural for the electorate to punish them by electing a conservative (who won’t “deal” with it, either). But when that conservative fails, the media won’t act like it’s time to go back to progressive policy!

So the prospect of the electorate punishing 36 years of tough-on-crimeness in didn’t register, and countless assured “It was justified for Paul Vallas to win” prewrites got burned.

@cpoliticditto when I bought my used car Sirius figured out that I was the new owner and hadn't activated their service... They were RELENTLESS. Nonstop phone calls and mailers to my house for like a year!

@RobeeShepherd @jwcph The other program that I've been meaning to try out is Plasticity. It's billed as "CAD for artists". It's not free, but has a sensible price with no subscriptions.

2023-05-13

@RobeeShepherd @jwcph agreed on the learning curve. I'd love something like TinkerCAD, but more powerful and with parameters! They could SO easily attach variables to the dimensions and rotation angles at least. They've actually been making improvements in recent weeks, so maybe eventually we'll get more features.

@cooopsspace @saluki seriously though, it's all money, right? Spotify has been trying to monetize podcasts super hard over the past couple of years. I wonder how many people now listen through Spotify or Apple and don't even realize how podcasts work, or what makes them special!

2023-05-11

@ryancordell seriously! I'm already seeing more pushback related to the lack of knobs in cars, so in another decade I'm hopeful we'll be past the touchscreen and touch-button obsession. I just want clicky, twisty, tactile controls that remain in the same place!

with the news that my home #mastodon instance is likely shutting down, I decided to try my own single-user server... Thanks to #fedifetcher and #fedibuzz I think it might actually work well!

I'm going to wait a week or so to migrate this account in case the media storage gets too out of hand though.

@alwayscurious in my view the police are very much the physical hand of the government. Ah least it's not the American government in this case...

2023-05-11

@alwayscurious do the police not work for the government?

2023-05-11

@alwayscurious @element I think it's most, but not all government? They now list the French government, German armed forces, an Austrian public university, and a Seattle conference as customers on their website.

Home.social is going to be shutting down. Any suggestions for a new home that is filled with happy weirdos?

2023-05-10

@haxing_ninja nah, I'm just cynical!

2023-05-10

@haxing_ninja oh for sure - it's probably a larger concern for the future when it's no longer open source.

2023-05-10

@haxing_ninja ah ok. I agree with your last bit there. But then I think the important differentiation is between being one of many customers vs being the PRIMARY customer. And in this case government is apparently the primary customer, per their website even. I am curious what % of their current or future funding is expected to be from governments. (vs private VCs) My conflict of interest concern is based on the assumption that it's a sizeable %. Maybe I'm overestimating there.

2023-05-10

@haxing_ninja don't agree with me, or with them being customers? The fact that element sells to governments is really my biggest issue here.

2023-05-10

@ralf @philheppenstall @furbyonsteroids to that point, could you shut off new subscribers and slowly remove problematic accounts? I imagine maintaining larger instances would require more powerful moderation tools and more moderators, similar to Reddit communities. I do hope Mozilla helps develop these tools for Mastodon, but in the meantime, go small? I'd be sad to lose home.social!

2023-05-10

@NBCactus yep I saw some confusion around the wording, but it seems to have worked in their favor. "No no no, we're not compromising your DATA, just our values!" 😂
