You can often build tools for Vim in whatever language that you're proficient in and plug them into the editor.

Here's one article that prepares a custom python formatting script and easily integrates it with Vim's "equalprg": seanh.cc/2026/01/18/ruff-forma

Even if you enable Vim You, Autocorrect! whilst composing your emails, will never get it this wrong.

@aartaka In case this wasn’t clear, I wasn’t offended! Your toot read to
me like a self-deprecating joke inspired by genuine curiosity.

But coming directly after an interaction with me seemed like too much of a coincidence not to be connected! 😂

@aartaka Haha if the people you’re subtooting include me it’s because I don’t believe there’s much crossover between the people that are interested in my various pastimes. I have a bunch of different accounts/sites. *This* one is 100% dedicated to Vim.

@aartaka @alderwick `git stash -p` (interactive hunk-by-hunk stash) is also occasionally useful, if you’re not aware of that one.

I set all of Vim's 376 configuration options, and I still feel far from mastery. But I did learn that it used to be called Vi IMitation... evanhahn.com/i-set-all-376-vim

@gumnos I know (of) one person that might know the answer to this. Unfortunately, that person is you.

Normal Modenormalmode

@aartaka FWIW I use it, occasionally.

@shinmera This will only be helpful if you ask the same question again later, but “mode” isn’t the right word for what you’re talking about in Vim. (And thus it took me a minute to figure out what you were asking.) In Vim it’s called a “Filetype.” If you’re only looking for syntax highlighting then you’d probably just say “syntax plugin”.

@aartaka That all makes sense to me. I still don’t really get what a declarative back end would look like or what it would do though. (Possibly this is obvious to someone with more web development experience than me, so you should only explain more if you feel like it.)

Normal Modenormalmode

@aartaka I can’t quite figure out what you mean by (declarative) backend here. Is this something you can give me an example of or is it a hypothetical things that has never existed?

Also, I’m pretty sure this isn’t what you’re asking for, so I guess I’m just making conversation, but are you already aware of pythonanywhere.com?

No idea how well it’s worked for any of them financially though.

@oantolin @jsit

You can also insert a <C-O> or <C-P> into the sequence to make it repeatable in older versions of Vim or when surrounding something too large for the small delete register:

cw"<C-R><C-O>""

(Using the small delete register for this is a reasonably new addition to Vim.) vi.stackexchange.com/a/21119
