"New rule for trail running: if you set out to climb a mountain within six hours of sunset, bring your damn headlamp”

A SWE in a HWE world. Walks to work in Cupertino. World’s laziest ultra runner. Still a kid from Long Island.

@MartyFouts @amcvittie I’d tried the first time in Soquel Forest Parking Area, a small clearing off Highland Way before hiking up towards Santa Rosalia. If you can see the sky, you’re good. If you’re under huge trees… not so much. Leaves absorb RF almost as well as sunlight.

@MartyFouts @amcvittie for what it’s worth, I’ve used iPhone satellite messaging in the Santa Cruz mountains. I’d like a dedicated device just in case, though.

@counternotions it’s going to be a phone with nothing but a mic and a speaker that only talks to open ai servers. Wow such innovation.

@asymco $6.5-billion for a 55-person 2yo design company without a single product that will stand independent and the founder Ive will not even be an officer sounds…totally normal.

I complained to a Brazilian co-worker it was 74 degrees in the office and he sent me this

Screenshot of Brazilian news program talking about the cold weather (24 degrees Celsius, which is... 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit.) The Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the USA recommends indoor temperatures be between 68-76°F

Apropos of nothing

In January 2000, AOL bought Time Warner for $162 billion dollars, or roughy $300 billion in 2025 dollars. It was a bold move and worked out great for all involved.

Waxing poetic in a tabloid bromance aside, name a single consumer product of design/utility/significance brought to life post-Apple by the guy who also gave us iOS 7, butterfly keyboard, Touch Bar, 18k gold Watch Edition, bendable iPhones, trashcan Mac Pro, etc.

@paulrobertlloyd @tonyarnold not sure he’s capable of designing products, period. He needs an editor. Jobs is gone. Has Jony surrounded himself with people who can’t tell him “no”?

@octothorpe “What if the phone UI looked like a fragrance package?” “What if Watch was a Velben Good made of a rare gold alloy?” “What if Vison Pro showed a blurry picture of eyeballs?”

Actually, yeah, I hope he helps drive OpenAI into the ground. Sam is not Steve Jobs.

@octothorpe “While much of Ive’s work at Apple revolved around the specific look and feel of products in the physical world, he also took greater responsibility for software issues on certain devices toward the end of his tenure there.”

He’s very good with materials but absolutely not a software guy and made many things worse, then left other people to clean up the mess he’d made. Not a fan lol

@octothorpe I think lots of people succeed at Apple, but then they think it’s because they’re awesome, and not because the company itself is a machine for executing ideas at a scale that is unparalleled
