By day, I'm a #SharePoint Developer working with PowerShell, Power Apps and Power Automate. #M365

By night, mostly #IndieWeb, #Privacy, #SmallWeb, #SlowWeb and a lil bit of sass.

@TerryHancock I think it's pretty hard to train yourself to be skeptical of things that reinforce your own worldview. The central park Karen is an example for myself. I consider myself pretty progressive so of course a white lady would call the cops to get a black man harmed. Turns out it's not anything like the news portrayed it as. Kind of shifted my whole world view and nothing is real for me anymore. Hah!

Why libraries are the greatest places on earth:

- books
- free!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- quiet, so quiet, so peaceful is heaven
- people leave you alone
- also movies and computers and things
- staff literally know everything and want you to know everything thanks
- you can stay the whole time they're open and not have to pay anything at all
- you can get lost in the big ones and that's cool
- mmm smells of wisdom

@sophie I personally just backup specific folders in the home directory. I documented some details:

@CodingItWrong We should all contribute! But even if we all did contribute, I'm not really throwing shade on the people who run infrastructure for things like mastodon.

2022-10-07

@CodingItWrong Yeah man, agreed that running infra is a thankless job and I'm not at all criticizing the Ash family. I hope everything is going to be ok!

I see a lot of people with dogmatic views about the decentralized vs centralized argument. I think most people over state the advantages of a decentralized model in the instance of social media.

What if something happened to Eugene though? Does he have backups and admins who are able to pay for things etc for the flagship instance?

2022-10-07

@cambridgeport90 Agreed on all accounts.

2022-10-07

@saramg I follow a lot of people who call that instance home so I think it's pretty good. It's also a larger instance. Some consider that good, others bad so you'll have to decide. ;)

Periodic check in to talk about Linux laptops. Loving my X1 Nano first gen. Even with an i5 it’s plenty powerful for what I need a personal machine to do: browsing, light text editing and messing with scripts, and slicing 3D prints. Works great with my Type-C/DisplayPort hub and monitor. Weight is more like a 12” iPad Pro than a laptop. Keyboard travel is short but not terrible.

@pmarg Bandcamp is great for indie and small bands and artists but I find myself feeling frustrated if I want to buy music from pop or mainstream bands

2022-10-02

@ozoned and your non-techical friends and family use it?

2022-10-02

@ozoned what do you use instead?

2022-10-02

@dch but yeah, i hear you with the problems re signal. to me the perfect messaging app would be some like xmpp but with modern features. Open source. Can self host. Don't have to use a phone number to use.

2022-10-02

@dch any idea how much metadata leaks? Of course someone can see that I'm using signal but can they see who I'm messaging or is Signal able to mask that?

2022-10-02

Does anyone know how resistant to cellebrite the non-google android OSs are? Like, in general are they better than standard or nah?

2022-10-02

@dch @rysiek the first link you posted seems to contradict some of your points.

> When you use Signal, your data is stored in encrypted form on your devices.

2022-10-02

@gruff @neil To further clarify, I don't think the signal proxy to cash analogy works*

2022-10-02

@gruff @neil I don't think the signal to cash analogy works.

To be clear, I use signal and am in favor of privacy in general and digital privacy specifically.

2022-10-02

@neil @gruff yes, correct Neil.

2022-10-02

@gruff I do not.

2022-10-01

I must be getting jaded in my old age. When I first heard of the signal proxies, I briefly considered running one but I was concerned about proxying traffic of nafarious actors and somehow being associated with actual terrorists, or dark web stuff of the bad kind.
