📝🚨 When we talk about Big Data, what do we really mean? #BigData is essential for state of the art #DataScience and the training of algorithms as well as #AI systems.

Article➡️ frontiersin.org/journals/big-d

However, the lack of a clear definition and scope for Big Data results in scientific research and communication lacking a common ground. Even with the popular “V” (volume, variety, velocity, variability, etc) characteristics, Big Data remains elusive.

🚨📝 The #EU #AI Act is out, but what does it mean for general-purpose AI (#ChatGPT & co)? In our new Internet Policy Review article, we argue that the #AIA has significant potential to become a global benchmark for governance & regulation in this area of strategic global importance. However, its success hinges on effective enforcement, fruitful intra-European and international cooperation, and the EU's ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

How can one measure Data Autonomy? ⬇️📏📈

Many colleagues have asked us to work on a less conceptual and more admin-friendly approach to analysing the data autonomy of a cloud-based service. Therefore, starting in autumn 2023, we started to work on the design of the Data Autonomy Index (DAIX), which we are now happy to share with you!

🆕📝🚨How can we enforce #dataprotection rights effectively? Dr. Karl Wörle & me analyse the potential of private enforcement next to administrative fines.

We compare the 🇺🇸 with the 🇪🇺 culture around collective enforcement and class actions, taking into account the updated EU legal framework.

A true pleasure to work on this with an old friend whom I met first studying law at Universität Innsbruck 😊🎓

🆕📝🚨 As there is chatter to ban #TikTok in the US, can the EU achieve more #transparency with the #DigitalServicesAct?

In absence of a clear definition of what transparency means according to the #DSA progress is limited, yet noticeable. It remains to be seen how effective enforcement will be.

Our article is now out #OpenAccess in the journal ZEuS 👉 doi.org/10.5771/1435-439X-2024

🚨📝🚨We want #TikTok & other platforms to embrace #transparency - but what does that actually mean? In this forthcoming #openaccess article in ZEuS, the super talented Lisa Kosters & me search for answers using a scoping review methodology, next to a legal analysis of #DigitalServiceAct provisions.

Preprint here; papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf

There are 3 layers to the transparency discussion. Yet ultimately, in absence of clear legal definitions, it remains unclear.

🌐 🆕 In the age of datafication, power dynamics are shifting. In this new article I explore the concept of "data autonomy" as a response, focusing on human dignity. It goes beyond traditional debates on digital sovereignty, encompassing private actors, organizational autonomy, and addresses AI-driven risks. 📊💼 #DataAutonomy #DigitalSovereignty #HumanDignity

@lilianedwards the more interesting question is probably how many subscriptions Meta thinks it will sell & how that compares to reality.

2023-10-31

@lilianedwards the point was more that the ‘promise’ that FB/Meta services will always be ‘free’ is now no longer the case.

But it’s most likely a gamble to see how many ppl will use the services through paid subscriptions, and then either reduce the problems around ads, or be able to tell EU policymakers that they don’t know what ‘their’ people want. We will see.
