@SaraSoueidan bless you Sara.

I know you know, saying this out loud so you know I know…
Blog post updates are not on you! Your writing was true to your (extensive!) knowledge and understanding when you hit publish. The onus is on the rest of us to catch up in the meantime 😅

Seriously, great to hear you are busy with work that pays 🙏

Researchers, using the JWST, have confirmed that a black hole, first detected in 2023 by the same team, is indeed a supersonic Runaway Supermassive Black Hole, ejected by and racing away from its host galaxy at 3.43 million km/h 😮

RBH-1 contains ~20 million solar masses and has left behind a 200,000-light-year-long "contrail" of newborn stars, twice the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy, as it plows ahead into the circumgalactic medium (CGM).

This is an artist's impression of a runaway supermassive black hole that was ejected from its host galaxy as a result of a tussle between it and two other black holes. As the black hole plows through intergalactic space it compresses tenuous gas in front of it. This precipitates the birth of hot blue stars. This illustration is based on Hubble Space Telescope observations of a 200,000-light-year-long "contrail" of stars behind an escaping black hole.

@letterror @birds Flow is on my to-watch list, but haven’t quite got there yet.
I have watched one of these birds on telly. It was using those long legs to end a snake!

Secretarybird

A distinctive, tall, long-legged, crane-like raptor with unique quill-like plumes on its head and bright-red facial skin. In flight, the dark edge to the hind wing, diamond-shaped tail, and long spatulate tail feathers make it unmistakable. It prefers open rangeland and savanna, where it strides about hunting for reptiles, small mammals, and insects, which it bludgeons with its powerful legs.

accessible?

@SaraSoueidan made an in-depth analysis of the accessibility claim for CSS carousels and found holes: sarasoueidan.com/blog/css-caro

Too many words? Take note of that feeling, and let @sundress explain why all these words are necessary: alice.boxhall.au/articles/a-th

If CSS carousels have been since fixed I’d be delighted to hear about it!

@AmeliaBR @tigt @eeeps I understand the need to have the control self contained, for portability. But a thought I don’t expect I’m first to think:

One of the world’s earliest surviving chess sets ♟️

This nearly complete set dates to the 12th century and is believed to come from Nishapur, Iran. Made of molded and glazed stonepaste, the pieces take beautifully abstract forms: the shah (king) appears as a throne, the vizier as a smaller throne, the elephant with tusk-like projections, the horse marked by a triangular head, the chariot shaped as a rectangular block with a wedge on top, and the pawns as faceted hemispheres with small knobs.

This set is now preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In this interactive web demo, @gdc shows an alternate method for text justification, called “cogent” or “semi-justified” alignment, where each line is justified if possible within a range of spacing limits, but left-aligned otherwise:

Fraser Muggeridge gave a great related talk at @ANRT this year, focused on an example from Herbert Bayer:

(Unfortunately the video is cut off at the end.)

Does anyone know other examples of this technique in use?

Nope, this is not what our going on. Something is screwy with the height calculation of subgrid row 2

Ollie Boermansollicle
2025-12-16

Anyone using subgrid encountered this problem?

Appears subgrid lanes (plus subgrid row-gap) must be at least as tall as parent grid row-gap to avoid excess height?

Screenshot of example of subgrid with Firefox dev tools grid highlight enabled.
The layout has excess height due to a subgrid lane height is less than the parent grid row-gap.
