@augustusbrown You're absolutely right โ€” e-mail is so old it was developed to cope with *servers* only going online for short bursts of time.

The notion of having a local e-mail app (rather than just telnetting into your server) is more recent and dates back to the dialup era in home computing. Outlook has swung back to the early model of providing a thin client for an application that is mostly delivered server-side.

Clear-eyed piece by Josh Bornstein on Albanese's invitation to Israeli pres Isaac Gerzog to visit Australia to comfort Jews in the wake of the Bondi attack.

He lays out how this blurs the distinction between Jews and Israel, a distinction that matters because so many Jews are anti-Zionist in their politics.

FUCK IT, MISSING DOS WEDNESDAY

Trying to locate an Australian DOS game from โ‰ˆ 1988, ๐‹๐ž๐ฑ, ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐…๐ฎ๐ง ๐Ÿ.

The game was part of a series of four Edutainment games by Reckon Software/John Grimley.

Here's the box cover art, a text ad, and screenshots of 2 other games in the series! Help a gal out!?

Lex, Word Fun One cover art. Wizard with helicopters. Incredible concept.
The game allows you to become a wordy pilot of the Semantic Squadron, I've read!๏ปฟWord Fun 1

Based on a helicopter theme, this package provides learners with plenty of hands on action as they take control of their various aircraft. Its interesting graphics reinforce the fantasy aspect of a skill building word rescue assignment.
Oppocopter uses words taken from a large pool of carefully selected exact opposite pairs, that have beeen graded into four levels of difficulty. The learner manoeuvres a helicopter to shoot down the correct opposite from a multiple selection. A scorebar counts correct answers, but if an error is made, the correct answer is highlighted. At each level, one of four speeds can be chosen to place a time limit on answering each question.
Synocopter asks the learner to effect a rescue by helicopter, by matching a word with its exact synonym to correctly locate the target. There are three levels of difficulty and three speeds to choose from.
Alphacopter provides a unique way to practise alphabetical skills as well as strategic problem solving skills. Using a helicopter to lift the top word block off one of three piles and then to move it to another pile, the learner is able to transform a randomly ordered pile of words into an alphabetically ordered array. Six levels grade this activity from a simple task to a most demanding one.
The exciting action in all three games gives this package a particularly strong computer games appeal which is well balanced by its sound educational content.Spelling Fun 1 menu screen. In fetching CGA!Lex, Wizard of Words commencement screen. Yet more lovely CGA!

This is giving me LIFE โ€” there's a tit-for-tat drag war happening between two young creators, a gay lad in the Philippines and a young woman in Viet Nam. She ruthlessly mocks his transitions and satirises his blond haired, blue eyed drag persona, while he responds by savaging her in elaborately sarcastic Tagalog. There are dozens if not hundreds of videos in this exchange.

@Susan60 @emily_rugburn @AnthoDerv 40 here. But I think what we have in common is that we woke up to being neurodivergent as a result of a huge social upswell in conversation and cultural production about neurodiversity. We are siblings of different ages, that's all.

(Now who's being pollyanna!!)

I had one of these teeny tiny phones! It was my daily driver for a number of years. I loved that it fit in the coin pocket of my jeans. No doubt the piezo ringer directly caused some of my hearing loss and tinnitus.

This was all pre-apps, pre mobile browsing, and SMS still cost 20 cents per each* so I never really noticed the limitations of the teeny tiny keyboard. The phone software was exquisitely designed for efficient use with only up/down OK/cancel buttons for navigation. I miss it heaps.

* sorry to be obnoxious but this phrase has colonised the supermarkets I shop at and I just find it so cute: per each! What even is that use of language?

Screencap of a Panasonic GD-55 tiny phone from the mid-2000s. It was the size of two matchboxes joined on their long end. In the capture a museum curator wearing black nitrile gloves is holding it between two fingers and it's barely bigger than the palm of their hand. It had a 'friendly' face โ€” distinctly curvy plastic with ovoid buttons.

#Mozilla: we have a pile of cash far bigger than we need to maintain a more or less mature product. We want to invest it in fairly cheap but absolutely essential foundations and innovations around #AI safety, ethics and guardrails.

@Susan60 @emily_rugburn @AnthoDerv Apologies, that was an unnecessarily sarcastic response when I could have just said, yes, I agree!
