rounding off a decade of research with my final talk for malwarebytes at this year's virus bulletin conference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLDcKHsvXOY the full paper about visa and immigration scams can be found here: https://www.virusbulletin.com/uploads/pdf/conference/vb2023/papers/The-history-and-tactics-of-visa-centric-scams-in-search-spam-and-social-apps.pdf
@LysaMyers principal threat researcher comes very close to what i have done / do now (with a few "i haven't done all of this stuff" caveats). would hugely appreciate a good word for that one though - I can probably get a submission in for it on thursday. thanks!
@brianhonan cheers!
@gsuberland ah, boo to the bad stuff and hooray for the good stuff!
@gsuberland ole boydy's (soon to be) out of a job lmao https://infosec.exchange/@paperghost/111047507006190661 not bad other than that, how's you?
@gsuberland still here! something went wrong with my login and it's taken me forever to fix. still largely over on the hellsite and bluesky at the moment
I'll be looking for work from next month. If you know of a UK based, full-time remote position in security (I research but I usually - but not always! - report to marketing as everything I do is public facing) then by all means let me know. linkedin here https://www.linkedin.com/in/paperghost/
i had to play counter strike for work purposes which was somewhat novel https://www.malwarebytes.com/blog/news/2023/05/evading-russian-media-restrictions-with-custom-video-game-maps
It turns out you can simply serve a file from a domain to use it as your bsky handle.
So this guy is now S3. All of S3.
@mcc this is fantastic, ty
i'll be giving my first talk in 6 years in october at VB2023. it is, of course, about visas because i am relentlessly on brand https://www.virusbulletin.com/conference/vb2023/
@PublicChaffinch cheers! this is what happens when your surgeon has a minions bandana
@BethanyBlack ty, chainsaw would've been better i think! something internal got snagged or clipped / caught that shouldn't have been, stiches tore after i left the hospital, bad bleeding, a mild infection, the works. can actually sort of walk around now for more than 10 seconds!
had my hernia op last sunday, and it's a sign of how spectacularly badly everything went wrong that this is the first time i've been able to hold a phone up. won't be online for a while, but on the bright side i've discovered that you can't get rid of me that easily
@ghosthungarian was a screenshot on here from twitter which flashed down my timeline. i get that raimi isn't everyone's cup of tea but my god, has there ever been a director *more* suited for comic book panel framing
"sam raimi loves first person, off center camera zooms and pans. He's not meant for the genre (comics)"
you think you've seen all of the bad takes, and then whoops! here's another one
@BethanyBlack cheers! glad to hear that your op went well, fantastic news :)
@BethanyBlack lmao oh my god, amazing. the stress when i opened the letter up and was like "these have to arrive tomorrow somehow"
@tkteo yeah i dunno if it differs by region in the uk or it's just down to individual practices but apparently this is "the latest government advice" which overrides all previous guidance. they'll only accept the ones you get posted out because paid-for tests don't let you enter the results on the website. why they won't just use paid for tests, i've no idea. and thanks - good luck with your procedure too!
