Chilean by birth, Palestinian & Ecuadorian by blood. Professionally, I dabble in tech governance, trust and safety and international relations. Currently I pay the bills by working on data & implementation @oversightboard. ex @meta | @mindefchile All the usual caveats, views my own, etc.

These @mmasnick pieces debunking Musk misrepresentations of the Twitter Files are devastating in their patience and clarity.
They also show how Taibbi, Weiss, and Shellenberger have no idea what they're doing or twisting the facts. The latter two are not journalists so maybe they lack the knowledge/skills to see beyond their initial hot take and get down in the weeds (or so sure of themselves they can't see that). Taibbi should know better but made his choices.

Up until very recently, if there was something important going on anywhere in the world, it was virtually certain to be in my Twitter feed. Not just RTs of media reports, but discussion, etc. That just doesn't seem to be true any more over there. And it's not here yet.
Per @ryansingel, Mastodon instance owners operating in the US can file a complaint for Twitter’s bad business practices with the FTC here: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/ (I assume Meta etc. are already on it.)
Platform owners have broad discretion to set policies regulating speech on their platforms, but the federal government tends to view restraint of trade and punishing competitors as anticompetitive practices that do not necessarily enjoy that particular protection.
Just a friendly reminder!
It’s not complicated: Elon can do whatever he wants with Twitter, just as Twitter could do what it wanted pre-Elon.
Then, Twitter wanted to build a space aimed at inclusivity and avoided disinformation. Musk wants to build something different. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/12/16/elon-musk-twitter-trump/?itid=ap_philipbump
I’m looking to hire a few senior product managers to join my team.
You’ll work on some interesting things while making services better for San Franciscans.
The team is supportive and kind, and all our jobs are union jobs.
Currently, we are one day a week in person in downtown San Francisco and you need to work from CA the rest of the time. I’d like to hear from anyone who is interested in product in local govt
HAVING KIDS
• expensive & boring
• they will live with you for 18 years
BEFRIENDING A CROW
• cheap & exciting
• they will bring you gifts
• there is a good chance they will also be willing to do crimes for you
If this started with your family’s safety then why are you laughing about it?
@matt the time to fully stop using the bird site is coming much faster than I thought it would
You know what other famous person's plane is also publicly trackable via its ADS-B transponder and is relentlessly followed around by photographers, press, and regular people who want to yell at him? Air Force One.
With each new surge of Mastodon users, I feel the need to point out:
1. Welcome!
2. There is a learning curve here, but most people find it short and not very steep. Play around, explore. You'll get it.
3. Lots of people are willing to help.
4. Yes, it's different than Twitter. Sometimes in good ways, sometimes not. But you'll figure it out.
5. With surges especially, things sometimes get slow/glitchy, but they usually get fixed pretty quick.
Be patient.
@RobynCaplan lately it’s either fine or completely exhausted and losing my mind. No middle ground. What’s going on …
Seems like a good moment to promote open vacancies at @oversightboard, please share:
@ubiquity75 I find it hard to disprove your claim that there’s a disconnect between c-suite and the reality that everyone else knows it’s “right” for content mod. However, a lot of the time we confound c-suite mentality with bad, unintentional even, applications of what would otherwise be sound principles. I find it hard but necessary to separate straight intentional “evil” from incompetence. When we get good at that we will be able to effect change more effectively.
When I was young, I thought intelligent people ruled the world. Now I know it is a blend between scams, sociopaths and postal code where you were born.
@RobynCaplan I'm being bombarded by Rimowa ads lately. If it weren't for the price I sure would have bought one - they look *premium* but I'm sure there are better alternatives out there.
I think this Wired piece on the Oversight Board from Steven Levy gives a decent overview(?) of few things I’ve been involved with the past 2 years:
https://www.wired.com/story/inside-metas-oversight-board-two-years-of-pushing-limits/
Interested what others think! If you think it’s worth more of your time, we’re hiring into my team too (see my last post).
For any folks looking for a new place to work, my team (which assists Oversight Board Members with cases review and policy) will be hiring a 14 month contract for a senior officer (SF/DC/London) to start in New Year. Trust and safety or human rights experience very welcome!
Ad going up next week & will be posted here: https://oversightboard.bamboohr.com/jobs/?source=other
@matt finally decided to try it out - thanks for helping me make the leap !
