One cost driver for maintaining a Mastodon instance is storage. I expect storing images and videos is most of it. If you have a good hi-res camera your photos require a lot of space. They are great for blowing up to billboard size, but all that space is wasted here. Reduce the resolution. You can use apps but my q&d method is to make my photo full screen on phone, take a screenshot, crop, and upload that. Try it; compare file sizes, picture quality.
