@tschak At a time in the past, I would have jumped in excitement for these types of announcements.
I think a big chunk of the retrocomputing hobbyist population is getting their attention and time focused on other real life concerns -- weaker job market, higher cost of living, and the need to provide for basic necessities and spending more quality time with loved ones. The amount of time I've been able to spend for my retrocomputing hobby has significantly dropped down.

@polpo This feature is one I've been waiting for. Does it emulate at the IDE/ATAPI layer? Are bootable CD-ROM images supported? My use-case is just standard ISO or BIN/CUE images, nothing special such as copy-protection or such.

Trying out an OPENSTEP native installation on an i386 platform, I'm reminded that the EIDE drivers in the 4.2 beta diskette (EIDE driver v4.03) have better compatibility with the built-in IDE controllers on many motherboards. If you get IDE-related kernel panics during installation, try using the EIDE drivers from the 4.2 beta drivers disk instead of that from the standard drivers disk.

@corduroy But... could it happen in the future? In some countries where Apple has been forced to disable e2e encryption for some categories of data, could health data eventually follow suit?

@MuseumJoe It's sad that similar retro hardware built and available from a foreign seller would turn out to be overall cheaper, even with the higher shipping costs.

@mroach Sooner or later, your object reference counting will be off by 1, and that's when tearing your hair out begins. Followed by banging your head on the wall. 🤪

@blakespot Some CDROM drives had custom drivers to read and extract the "+G" data.

There were also a lot of Karaoke devices back then that read CD+G discs and then display the text through a composite output hooked to a TV.

I had been pondering the past few weeks of what other apps made use of AppleTalk.

Yesterday, as I was testing something unrelated in my local setup, I remembered that Apple's own remote control software runs over AppleTalk. I've used it years ago, and am now wondering if it would work in the scale of GlobalTalk.

It's called Network Assistant. The version I have installed is v3.5. The target computer needs at least System 7.1, and the admin computer needs System 7.6.1.

Can anyone confirm or refute that we can have guest networks connecting to ? That's where you don't need to publish your AIR IP address and not worry about setting up port-forwarding and such.

I've torn down my AIR setup, but I could have sworn that a few months ago when my ISP assigned me a new IP address, I was still able to reach the other published networks. Possibly because the IP tunnel is initiated from my end? My own network will not be reachable by others though.

This podcast episode from my good friend @shanselman resonates a lot in owning your blog posts. This in contrast to what happens on most social media platforms today.

Just published a new DesignIssues note on the general vision of what a world will be like with everyone in control of their own data - the Solid Protocol benefits for when you have more than one app that has its data under your control.

@BlueSCSI Is BIN/CUE format support in the roadmap? A few of my CD-ROM images are in this format (multi-track) and I'm hoping to be able to mount them through BlueSCSI, even if just the first track.

The rise of Mastodon has made me so much more aware of government services requiring us to use private companies’ systems to communicate with them and access services.

Sitting on a Dutch train just now I was shown on a screen “feeling unsafe in the train? Contact us via WhatsApp”.

What if I don’t use WhatsApp? (I do, but I wish I didn’t have to) I’m forced to share my data with Meta to use it.

Public systems should not require use of private services.

@xodium I was an early customer of Michael McMaster's scsi2sd, where most of the legwork for SCSI device emulation was done. And he was very open to other folks re-using what he had.

Porting it to the Pico or other microcontroller is less of a feat. Although I am a huge fan of attribution, it's not a big deal if people don't (intentionally or unintentionally).

The ZuluSCSI has been on my want list for a long time, but I still haven't bought one at all.

I haven't tried this with the unit I have in storage, but the winner of this auction should try attaching it to a PC parallel port and join GlobalTalk. It is presumably compatible with PhoneNet. ebay.com/itm/116254911197

Yet another take on setting up Apple Internet Router on a 68k Mac to join the GlobalTalk network. This on a Quadra 605 (LC 475 / Performa 475 / Performa 476) running System 7.5.5 with the IP Tunnel going through the DaynaPort Ethernet emulation in BlueSCSIv2
