Today’s thoughts on iOS 26 beta

🗺️ All the obvious problems about titles and section headers are still obvious. But what’s less talked about is that fullscreen Map {…}.navigationTitle(_) is a disaster.

You can see how someone might think that Haunted Mansion is somewhere in Star Wars land in this screenshot.

This could be on me. WWDC26-323 suggests that Toolbar (not Navigationbar) should have the proper effect. developer.apple.com/videos/pla

Our family usually celebrates 🇺🇸 4th of July 🇺🇸 with “traditional boba and burritos”. This year we’re doing “yum cha and agua fresca” with our fellow twin-family.

Wow! Did this report from Kuo come out the same day @gruber and @louie were subtweeting me?

Perfectly timed comedy.

Off to pick up the twins. Goodnight, everyone!

Apple glasses might be more real and less “wild claim”.

Time will tell, I suppose.

Good time to think twice about why Liquid Glass is designed the way it is.

@gregggreg With good cause.

Anyway, coffee tomorrow?

@gregggreg Overly dramatic keyboard clacking, “Apple’s implementation of side loading is perfect and needs no changes.”

@gregggreg Haha! iCloud sync is stalkerware. Love it!

Michael Critzpixelscience
2025-07-03

@gregggreg So where is all the iOS stalkerware?

Michael Critzpixelscience
2025-07-03

@gregggreg Enterprise provisioned stalkerware absolutely is how I feel about my Jamf encumbered work Mac. 🤣

It is currently extraordinarily hard to sideload stalkerware* — or any native app — to the general public. Certainly not to the point where 60,000+ people get their data leaked.

It’s the whole fight between Apple and the EU. And the EU is on the side of stalkerware.

>* But I’m serious about the App Review failing to find stalkerware. chatgpt.com/share/68660020-2db

@gregggreg Either:

- my device is set to developers mode, my hardware is added to your ADC account, you build and run an app from source on my device, your app has the correct entitlements, the entitlements are signed correctly, you launch the app and grant permissions for the privacy settings you want to exploit
- you have some elaborate and expensive zero day exploit
- You can download the app from a third party App Store
- Apple lets some stalkerware app through app review

@gregggreg But let’s say you’re a super spy and need to monitor my phone. You sneak a peek at me when I type in my passcode.

You’d need an app. The app would have to be available *somewhere* to install.

@gregggreg So, you can’t install anything on my phone.

Michael Critzpixelscience
2025-07-02

@gregggreg But how would you even unlock my phone?

Michael Critzpixelscience
2025-07-02

@gregggreg 1. When was the last time you tried? Palera1n only supports iPhone 13 on iOS 15. If you have a way to bypass local auth you should be selling it for millions of dollars to GRU, North Korea, ICE, or whoever.

2. EU is absolutely making installing stalkerware on iOS “a thing”. It might be limited, like your partner or the Customs Agent may have to coerce you. But it’s possible now. Where it wasn’t before.

Michael Critzpixelscience

Could this happen on iPhone?

No… as long as you don’t live in the EU.
