#MacabeKeliher. “Ritual in the Early Modern World: Proliferation, State-Formation, and the Work of the Manchu Surrender Ceremony.” Journal of World History 35:3 (2024): 377–406.

Abstract:

#Ritual permeated the early modern world. While historians have explored ritual in regional and national contexts, little work has made sense of it as a global phenomenon. As a consequence, scholars continue to give primacy to bureaucracies and militaries in accounts of #premodern state-formation. This article examines ritual in relation to early modern social and political developments, especially territorial expansion and increasing interactions. It argues that as polities contracted and empires expanded rulers relied on ritual just as much as institutional and administrative measures. Ritual was a key mechanism to do the work of inclusion and social organization in #governance and territorial expansion. In order to begin to theorize what ritual did and how it did it, the article turns to an empirical case study of the #Manchu surrender ceremony in the mid-seventeenth century. Through a close examination of the rite and its political and social background the article shows how ritual did the work of constructing and reconstructing social and political orders in the context of expanding #empires in a quickly changing world. Ritual, it is argued, constructed social orders and created subjunctives that helped political actors navigate fraught political and social relations.

[Conference News] In Aug. 10-11 (Sat. - Sun.), Renmin University of China #RUC is hosting a large conference on the formation and practice of the "Grand Unity" conception in #China, involving a lot about the rulership and governance of #Qing dynasty.

I am presenting my paper on the defensive turn of Qing political culture in early #19thcentury from the case of Emperor Jiaqing's imperial tour to Mukden. I appreciate anyone interested in my paper, but I guess the more important thing is the keynote speech part -- look at the keynote speakers!

Glad to hear that #ElizabethKaske is writing a book about #OfficePurchase in late #Qing. This will be the second masterpiece on office purchase (#juanna ) institution in English world.

Office purchase is the second most key approach to obtain a position in government -- either to get the first title or to seek to be promoted from a previous one. Unfortunately, this approach is far less known to most researchers than the famous civil examination institution. In Chinese we have Xu Daling's monograph in 1950, then not until Wu Yue publishes his essays can we advance this discussion in 2013 -- 60 years later than Xu! Lawrence Zhang's research is a milestone for English readers that he focuses on the first part of Qing Juanna #history , uncovering the impact of this system to the High Qing society. Elizabeth Kaske will be the next scholar giving a comprehensive argument in this field.

My point is, from the side of state, perhaps these events are not separated, but practices of a mode of governance in a early modern pattern of populism, where the despotic Qing state empowers the populace to propagate fear against a potential entity of social elites, in order to make the state's control concrete.

This is just an assumption, but I think there are more to reveal.

2023-10-12

A new point of interest: the popular politics of the Fugitive Law (1646-1799):

In the practice of FL, we see similar situation with later event like the #soulstealer case (1768), the fake memorial draft case (1751) and the cases of censorship on literature (through #Qianlong era), when the court set up strict punishment for potential rebels but fully relied on civil accusation to supervise them.

Thus, these laws, regulations and measurements became excuses for legal popular violence between ordinary people to hurt each other. People were desperate for clues of Fugitives, fake drafts and soulstealers so that they can make blackmail or revenge, or just get a tip -- just like the cyber bullying today, but, certainly, FL is much of fear.

It is true the Grand Secretariat Archive is not equal to but just one part of the #Qing #archive of central government. The other two parts, #宫中档 and Grand Council archive, are more common than Grand Secretariat Archive for researchers in many ways.

However, many #historians and #archivists are used to connecting the legendary story of Grand Secretariat Archive's misery in Republican era and the emergence of Qing archive. Even in the preface chapter of a book "90-Year-Enterprise of #Ming-Qing Archive", which is the official history of First Historical Archive of #China (#FHAC ) compiled in 2015, keeps this confusion by telling the Grand Secretariat Archive story as the beginning of the #history of Ming-Qing archive.

So, despite someone very dedicated in this field, perhaps one who misunderstands the relationship between Grand Secretariat Archive and the entity of Qing Archive is not unforgivable -- it's more like a convention...
