News will now be shared via Substack and events are on Eventbrite.

Realising I didn't come near Mastodon in 02023 and... didn't notice.

"Is... Is it okay to be weird?"
The witch studied the young woman.
"No."
"No? I thought you'd understand."
"Don't be weird," the witch said. "Be yourself."
"But..."
"Now, some people may call that weird, but that's their word, not yours. Be yourself, however that is."

@Faintdreams I'm glad that that framing feels useful. It certainly has been for me.
If you search for #digitalgarden or something similar you should find plenty of discussions of these approaches online.
The gamechanger for me (first in Roam, now in Obsidian) has been the ability to start a new note and immediately be shown how many times I've mentioned that topic in previous notes. As new priorities and interests surface, the software supports that brilliantly.

@Faintdreams I am loving Obsidian, several months after migrating from Roam Research.
I'm definitely a "gardener" rather than an "architect" when it comes to my note-taking, but I'm really appreciating the ability to include some folder structure in my digital garden.

*There's something darker going on as well.* Some of the inconvenience that US travelers are suffering is built into the system on purpose. Sales platforms are convenient by design because companies don't want to lose sales. Customer service platforms are inconvenient by design because the sale has already been made. Inconvenience makes people go away– and making people go away saves money.

I greatly appreciated this, @davidribes.
Can't quite remember how I found it (perhaps #TheMaintainers email list?) but I'm very glad to have saved it.

Your framings of #infrastrutcture and work had me stopping to make notes far too frequently for the recent cold weather in London.

Just gonna throw in a few more search terms for those who might be seeking our campfires...

This strip came out in 1995. What would Calvin’s dad have to say about technology in 2022? 😬🫠 #CalvinandHobbes

A Calvin and Hobbes comic strip featuring Calvin’s dad venting about the burdens of modern technology.

@nikclayton I have never had any results when searching for people on either Tusky or the Mastodon app (I can search for hashtags, but it always gives no results for accounts).

Until you suggested it, I don't think I'd actually visited the mindly.social website.
I searched there and it worked.
I'll have to try searching there in future.

Thank you!

Thanks, @musingoddity.
I suppose you could find him because you're both on @zirk.us!

Glad to be starting the new #BBC adaptation of #TheDarkisRising while still in England.

Hoping I'll still be able to access it from Greece tomorrow (while expecting some dissonance in vibes between the two locations).

Is #RobertMacFarlane here yet?

As the new #BBC adaptation of #TheDarkisRising begins, I'm thinking back to #thedarkisreading from a few years back.

One thing with which I'm really struggling here is the inability to search for people. Unless I already know someone's exact username (including their instance) I get no search results (I'm using the #Tusky app).

Am I doing it wrong?!

@ollie_francis I will now be reading up on @jarango's approach. One of my other initial guides is Ryan Murphy: fulcra.design/.

Another person moving their website to some form of markdown-based system, eh @jarango.
I hope it's going/gone well.
Currently figuring how best to make that move myself.
Time to take the #digitalgarden public.

So where do these quotes pop up, @willsh?
In an app? Via email?
Am intrigued by Readwise.
I highlight a fair amount on Kindle and in Audible. Much more in Pocket.
Might have to subscribe at some point.

My most recent encounter with anything at all guildly has been in the remarkably wise words of Ed Gamester.

I'm sharing this not-entirely-serious link in response to what seems to be a rather more serious exchange because, should you be able to pick up a copy, it's actually really good stuff.

@willsh I'd have thought that, in places where snow is considered likely to hang around for extended periods of time, the solar panels might include their own clearing mechanisms.

@jonty
Infrastructure Club remains the main reason I open Slack (my work stuff all tends either Teams or Discord).
That said, every time I go take a dip into it I'm reminded how much less
a) interesting
b) technically adept
and
c) online
I am than most of the regulars.

THERE'S JUST SO MUCH THERE! 🤩/🤯
