1/ At bargaining yesterday, @ProPublica management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.

Headline: ProPublica management wants 100% discretion over when and how to use AI
Supplementary text: The organization rejected our proposal that ensures staff will not be replaced by AI and requires labeling AI-generated content

@Tourma we agree with you!

5/ Here's management's response to our proposal that the company shall follow progressive discipline. It says management reserves the right to combine or skips steps.

The top of the image reads: "Our discipline proposal: The Company shall follow progressive discipline." The bottom of the image reads "ProPublica management's response" and shows the same text as above, but with a red line over the text. Below the struck out line, it reads "ProPublica shall endeavor to follow the principles of progressive discipline ... However, the Company reserves the right to combine or skip steps ..."

4/ Here's management's response to our proposal that a performance plan should have a set number of working days — a total strikethrough.

The top of the image reads: "Our discipline proposal: A valid Performance Improvement Plan must provide ... at least ninety (90) working days, not including holidays, vacation and leave, before the Company may determine that an employee failed to meet the objectives of a PIP."
The bottom of the image reads "ProPublica management's response" and includes the same proposal, but with red lines through all of the text.

3/ Here's management's response to our proposal that our members should have guild representation in disciplinary meetings — a total strikethrough.

The top of the image reads "Our discipline proposal: Employees shall have the right to have a Guild representative or steward present at any meeting that the employee reasonably believes may lead to discipline or discharge." The bottom of the image reads "ProPublica management's response:" and includes the same proposal, but with red lines striking out all of the text.

2/ Here's management's response to our proposal that PIPs must have clear, reasonable and objective criteria — a total strikethrough.

The top half of a graphic reads:
"Our discipline proposal: A valid Performance Improvement Plan must provide ... clear, reasonable and objective criteria or metrics by which the employee’s performance will be assessed. "
The bottom half shows management's response, the same text is all struck out.

1/ After two years of bargaining,
@ProPublica management has resisted our proposals to bring transparency and accountability to our disciplinary process.

You can support our union by sharing this post and signing our petition for a fair contract! actionnetwork.org/petitions/te

After two years of bargaining, ProPublica management has resisted our proposals to bring transparency and accountability to our disciplinary process. They will not commit to: 1. Following progressive discipline, 2. Ensuring performance improvement plans (PIPs) have clear objectives, 3. A minimum amount of time an employee has to a complete a PIP, 4. Guild representation in disciplinary meetings

@NudelnAlDente @ProPublica nope, but let us know if the required postal code field gives you any trouble.

A quote post from ProPublica Guild (@propublicaguild.org) on Bluesky, starting from the quoted post:

It's simple — @propublica.org workers should not be replaced by artificial intelligence. Our contract proposal specifically says that generative artificial intelligence ("GAI") should not be used to replace employees. Management struck out this entire section in their response to our proposal.

A screenshot compares “Our Artificial Intelligence proposal” with “ProPublica Management’s response” (Management's response looks like ours, but entirely struck out):

The use of GAl shall not result in the layoff of bargaining unit employees and shall not be used for the purpose of replacing or reducing bargaining unit work, reducing the number of employees, or reducing an employee's compensation.

The quote post reads:

Today, we had an all-day bargaining session with @propublica.org management. Unfortunately, they did not bring a counter proposal on AI or agree to any of the guardrails we've proposed.
