The first album I drove around to when I got my driver's license back in the stone age was Jurassic 5's Power In Numbers.

I didn't realize their "I Am Somebody" sampled a poem from Rev. Jesse Jackson until today.

What a powerful demand for respect and dignity for every single member of our species. Absolutely worth the minute-and-a-half (warning: YouTube Short):

Happy Lunar New Year/Tet to all who celebrate!

My South Korean immigrant parents never celebrated on the day because they and their siblings struggled to keep track of the Lunar calendar in the pre-Internet United States.

They decided to make January 1st the day we do the traditional stuff like bowing and money gifting instead and then called it a day.

It's an honor to know that my struggles with time computations span generations ❤️

@muhanga It's likely riddled with security flaws, but if you'd like my old Asus Zenfone 5Q as a loaner device, let me know!

@jbiserkov I find the 0.33L is great if I'm not sure how much I plan to drink for an evening

On the flip side, when memories of painfully embarrassing things I did as a teenager resurface to consciousness, the 0.5L is the perfect size 👌

(I really like the alcohol-free stuff too - the sugary soft drink market must be crapping itself)

There isn't a beer on earth that I've sipped and then thought to myself, "Boy, I wish they packaged this so that I'd be forced to consume an entire liter of this in one go!"

I don't know why they bother with all the Nordic imagery and branding of that 1 Liter beer can at all the supermarkets.

Just call it what it is already: Alcoholic's Choice

Finally got around to watching Bad Bunny's Superbowl halftime performance. Very lovely.

I understood it as a visually stunning celebration of Latin American culture, but I must also be among the least qualified people on earth to make that assessment.

A reminder that we all have terrible days, Charles Darwin too.

I hate every wave of the ocean.
-Charles Darwin to W. D. Fox 15 Feb 1836

Oh my God how I do hate species & varieties.
-Charles Darwin to J. D. Hooker, 11 Mar 1858

I am very tired, very stomachy & hate nearly the whole world.
-Charles Darwin to Thomas Huxley, 10 Sep 1860

I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything.
-Charles Darwin to Charles Lyell, 1 Oct 1861

I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees.
-Charles Darwin to John Lubbock, 3 Sep 1862

I am languid & bedeviled & hate writing & hate everybody.

@greenCoder Not a chance - the blockchain will show that I'M the owner! ME!

Besides, not a chance a generative AI trained on private or trademarked artwork would be accepted by society, much less the judicial system. Whew

@marick I've never seen it used in a non-scornful way from a non-US person. But a quick toot search seems like... the term may be picking up domestically? Could that be true?

More thoughts:

* I hear the term "US-American" in German news on a daily basis these days and it's feeling less and less awkward as they cover more and more of our despicable actions. It'll be weird for hyphenation though. Ear test:

"I'm Dominican-US-American."

* Architect Frank Lloyd Wright dubbed the blank canvas of US architecture "Usonian," a term he took from a Scottish writer. This one seems like it has potential but will require a lot of teaching. Ear test:

"I'm Lithuanian-Usonian."

People from the US need a better demonym.

The ignorance of calling ourselves "American" understandably irks our neighbors.

The reactive "USian" is loaded with derision.

Merrian-Webster's "United Statesian" ignores that our southern neighbors also are united states.

Adopting your state's demonym will just make a bigger mess.
"What is a Hoosier?"
"Stalin Georgia or Coca-Cola Georgia?"

Taking suggestions.

@plexus Meetup.com definitely had its moment, but their exponential pricing increases are bets that their list of registrants (that I'd guess peaked around 2014) counts as a social network, and that clones won't be able to replicate the value of that network.

Given that a lot of registrants' lives have probably changed significantly, however, I'd guess disruption is right around the corner.

Cool to see a fedi version! I hope they eat some of that pie

I genuinely can't believe I haven't encountered a company that's a "Meetup.com but cheaper and better" after years and years of their fuckery.

I can't think of a better company to undercut at the moment.

@jezhiggins @sf105 I probably should have excluded the UK from this generalization (although I'd appreciate knowing if soccer/football fans boo or whistle at opposing goals)

@sf105 Unless I'm mistaken, booing is a thing in the UK as well, right?

I love the idea of retro computing.

But I wish an old machine that performs like a Raspberry Pi would magically consume energy like a Raspberry Pi too.
