I wonder if anyone out there is actually excited to be on Arrakis, like people are excited to see the Millennium Falcon. Do people get a rush when they see a sandworm? Oh shit, it’s the guy from the movie! I don’t think there’s a sense of familiarity or longing or nostalgia. Most of the book is just telling us about how much Arrakis sucks. When you take away the setting, what is left? Wheels within wheels.

i’m curious if a piece of honest to god Science Fiction Literature has spawned more popular culture than Dune. The essence of dune, to me, is the quality of the writing, so a piece of media that lacks that, is essentially un-dunelike. Of course, this is a nearly impossible bar to meet, as herbert is tapping into some unknowable power. Additionally, most video game design is incompatible with writing , creating a doubly thick impossibility sandwich.
