M&S confirmed today that the retail outlet's network was initially breached in a "sophisticated impersonation attack" that ultimately led to a DragonForce ransomware attack.

@JigsawPieces Quite possibly

@WiteWulf Just hoping the bubble bursts sooner rather than later...

"AI-native network" đŸ€Ș

Email from HP has just landed in my inbox at work, trumpeting their acquisition of Juniper. Apparently, it's all about "creating the industry's first secure, AI-native network purpose-built with AI and for AI to deliver exceptional end user and operator experiences"...

#NowPlaying Liquid Wolf - First Light

Pointed to this 2017 release by the #Bandcamp recommendation algorithm. Very enjoyable #prog with guitars to the fore, supplemented by keyboards and tasteful additions of sax & flute. Almost like a heavier-sounding Camel.

When it comes to metal and prog, you can usually rely on Scandinavians to deliver the goods.

New album by Nine Chickens has just dropped. From the cover art it looks like they’re going back to basics.

Tesla's so-called "autopilot" turns off automatically a fraction of a second before a crash, so the driver might be blamed even though the driver has no time to respond. (It's been that way for more than a year since originally publicly documented by the NHTSA, this is clearly a choice someone made.)

theguardian.com/technology/202

(This is just one example out of many terrible things in their software.)

And while Tesla management clearly just loves doing terrible things, an individual engineer implemented this.

You don't want to be that engineer:

1. It's immoral, and a dereliction of your professional duty.
2. If your action ever goes to court, there will be some very expensive lawyers trying their best to make you the scapegoat and claim you are either incompetent or malicious, but you very definitely did this on your own.

When Volkswagen cheated on emissions, the CEO blamed... the engineers: "This was not a corporate decision, from my point of view, and to my best knowledge today. This was a couple of software engineers who put this in for whatever reason... some people have made the wrong decisions in order to get away with something that will have to be found out." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswag).

And most of the time the things you'll be asked to do aren't as bad. I know someone who was asked by their manager to put a CE mark on products that were from the non-CE factory. These devices weren't safety critical, this wasn't going to kill anyone. But it's still fraud, and the incentive was still there for the company to make this engineer the scapegoat.

The engineer said "no"... and that was the end of it. Sometimes that's all it takes to enforce standards.

If "no" isn't enough, asking for something in writing (signed and dated) is a good next step. Chances are that will be the end of it, and meanwhile you can start looking for a new job.

The guy in the flat above me plays the accordion. I'm constantly giving him shit over it and complaining to my mates. But sometimes when I'm sat there on an evening and I hear him playing, it moves me to tears. Can't stop pretending to hate it now tho.

Dear <A>,

My apologies for not getting back to you re: the compliance documents you asked me to read and sign. I have been watching the collapse of everything with great interest and I have concluded I no longer give a fuck about compliance.

Best,

R

The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday put on administrative leave 139 employees who signed a “declaration of dissent” with its policies, accusing them of “unlawfully undermining” the Trump administration’s agenda.

#NowPlaying Dim Gray - Shards

The excellent third full-length studio release from Oslo's finest. Like a proggy (proggier) Keane.

When your salad ingredients see what you just did to their mates.

A terrified pepper

Could you update the alt text to make the joke accessible for screen reader user?

I propose as alt text: A chili pepper leaning against a wall. Its shape is somewhat gnarled, evoking a crouched, frightened human figure.

#Gaza We watched this last night. It was the most traumatic thing I hsve ever seen. It shows how systematically Israel has destroyed Gaza’s healthcare system and killed doctors. This is ongoing - just yesterday many killed at Indonesian hospital.

I feel irrevocably alienated from all the lovely people around me who choose to just ignore all this. Not watch, not see. For almost two years the most barbaric slaughter, aided by our governments here.

Thank you Channel 4 for showing “Gaza: Doctors Under Attack”, the documentary the BBC wouldn’t broadcast, tonight.

A harrowing watch, but important. I hope more people see it for themselves rather than have papers tell them what to think.

Saw the last gig on @pluralistic ‘s tour tonight. His incredible pun was that he’s now Touring Complete. I strive to come up with this sort of shit myself one day.

Do not watch this space.

Is it too late for me to become a mid-century commercial artist who illustrates cheap, pulp paperbacks and lurid magazine covers?

digital painting of a woman's face half in shadow. Greenish, yellow tones

@mike Yes. It's a shame the band didn't stay together to make any other albums. But both Collins and Kerzner have done other things.

Collins' latest project is named eMolecule. Their album "The Architect" is much more in the vein of prog metal, and may be worth your time if you are interested in a heavier sound.
