Why are we rewarding this kind of abhorrent behavior? https://www.comicsands.com/shiloh-hendricks-racist-crowdfund?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=infeed&utm_campaign=linkprogram
@still@infosec.exchange @axel@social.glitched.systems the "third party tools" like tripwire are in the repositories of any of the distributions so it's just a case of installing and configuring.
There's also the more old school way of checksumming the binaries. Mounting the partition containing the as read only used to be a popular.
And to be honest. The solutions @axel talked are in use in enterprise environments all over the world. It's not a hobbyist thing.
Oh this is kinda cute ngl โค๏ธ
@SilentDetective@social.vivaldi.net @aral@mastodon.ar.al the ship regarding Firefox exploiting privacy sailed decades ago. A few of us voiced concerns when the "corporation owning a foundation" structure was implemented but were told that we were just being paranoid etc.
What we need is a proper open browser without corporate shenanigans and those are hard to find ๐
@gary_alderson@infosec.exchange @axel@social.glitched.systems I think this is entirely the wrong question. This post was about community building and helping eachother. What your hourly rates depends on what market you're in and how you manage to argue for it (also a lot about other things like systematic racism and such).
Axel here isn't saying "I can set it up for you for X dollars" he's saying "I can volunteer time and knowledge to help you get off the ground"
oh shit... my vmlinuz kernel images are small enough to easily fit within 32MB L3 cache, and then some!
Running linux entirely inside the CPU cache might actually be real, I'm gonna try this later and see how it goes.
Question for fedi users on larger instances:
What is keeping you from hosting your own smaller instance?
Over the past couple of days, I've been really thinking about different ways in which I could give back to the fediverse and one thing that I keep coming back to is that the fediverse would be a lot healthier in the long term if there were more smaller instances instead of a few bigger ones.
Smaller instances are cheaper to host, foster a closer-knit communities, and ease moderation overhead per-instance. Not to mention, a fediverse that's full of smaller instances is much more resistant to bullying by larger instances.
And to add to my original question, if you were interested in running your own instance, how could I help you do it?
Would you prefer a masto.host style model where I host/maintain your instance for you, or would you prefer a "bring your own server/domain" model where I help you get everything set up on your own infrastructure and give you documentation with ways to keep everything running and safe?
Or would you prefer a completely different approach?
I'm mostly just trying to brainstorm ideas here.

We have an obligation to not cooperate with evil, period.
@nikki@lgbtqia.space hi Nikki welcome to the fediverse. You will find this place to be filled not only with fantastic people but a vibrant queer community.
The inevitable news that Meta is beginning to deploy ads in Threads has traveled quickly. Less well-known is that the Social Web Foundation, which has self-assumed stewardship of the future of the fediverse, also sees the introduction of ads into the fedi as an aspect of its mission to commercialize the network.
That won't be evident if you visit the Mission page of SWF's website today. which displays the expected press-release happytalk about sustainability and "social infrastructure": https://socialwebfoundation.org/mission/
However, an archive.org backup of the text copy on this page from September 2024, shortly following the organization's launch, reveals a passage that was then quickly removed: https://web.archive.org/web/20240925094541/https://socialwebfoundation.org/mission/
The passage reads: "The Fediverse cannot thrive without people building clients or running providers. And to do those things, they need money. Whether thatโs advertising supported, or funded by charities and non-profits, or based on paid-for services, or affiliate revenue, we are working to find ways that companies can do well in the Fediverse."
The Research Director of SWF also leads the W3C ActivityPub working group and has provided Meta with several seats at the table around which ongoing development of the protocol is decided. And in a January 12 blog post following Meta's intensified embrace of fascism, SWF reaffirmed its partnership with them and rejected the validity of defederating Threads: https://socialwebfoundation.org/2025/01/12/content-policy-on-the-social-web/
We can presume that the Social Web Foundation sees the introduction of ads on Threads as just another step in the mission it shares with Meta - the normalization of surveillance capitalism on the fediverse

Interesting how the #Loops repo is marked as AGPL 3.0 code on github, and yet the backend server being used by the loops app is actually running newer code which has not been released to the public yet.
This is a violation of the AGPL 3.0 license clearly displayed on the project's github page, and all users who have interfaced with the Loops API are legally entitled to the updated backend source code too... where is the code? why are they so against just releasing the code in compliance with their own license already? smh

There's been a lot of talk about pixelfed and loops these last couple of days on account of their kickstarter.
I recognize that they're doing good work over there and honestly anything that can get more people onto the fediverse is a good thing in my books.
I've actually wanted to run my own instance of both of these tools until I came across this open letter talking about dansup's conduct within his own developer community.
https://dansup-open-letter.github.io/
The statements in this letter definitely showcase a pattern that I'm not fully comfortable with supporting. The hostility to his own developers and some of his stances on open source in general make me very worried.
I say all this not to shit on Dan or any of his projects, I genuinely do believe in the larger mission of getting more people on fedi, but I don't feel comfortable when one of the largest fedi developers acts this way.
I just thought more people should know this.
#pixelfed #loops #loopsvideo
@dansup do you plan to just make this work for pixelfed or are you going to plug into the body of existing work, PRs, design docs for establishing this on fedi? not sure EEE is a terribly good strategy given that we already have website boy setting fediverse policy by fiat bc he runs the largest server. would prefer to not create further sources of implicit power without establishing a negotiation process so users have more input on how these tools work across fedi
Wow, a single comment questioning @dansup@mastodon.social and I was immediately blocked, not even a discussion man? really?
their choice to keep calling loops "open source" while the code is closed, as well as the recent post about hiding federation features behind extra menus so all new users auto-signup to services controlled by him, is concerning for genuine reasons (although I'm sure he's already called me a troll or something)
This combined with the comments/jokes about "exploring" advertising for the loops platform is highly concerning, here you have somebody siphoning users into a single server they control, while developing an app they call open source without any code being available, who also thinks advertisements are a reasonable business model for the fediverse...
We could have just spoken about your views on this, but I suppose my ideas about FOSS and no advertising were too threatening lol
Think twice, or thrice, about actually signing up and supporting #Pixelfed or #Loops while dansup is behind them tbh
@dansup The โjust one personโ mentality is what gave us people like Mark Zuckerberg. The success of the fediverse has been the effort of many people
@dansup@mastodon.social first he says he'll open source the loops app "soon" (still closed source btw), then he jokes about adding advertising to his platform, now he hides the federation features behind a bunch of menus no regular user will bother clicking
why do I get the feeling that you're screwing me in the exact same way as Meta and Google Dan? at least open source loops already, it's kind of embarrassing to keep claiming it's an open source app when I can't look at the code yet
