Is Minimal Computing the answer, asks @tillgrallert @TEIConsortium : Well, what is the minimum in minimal computing? Not enough to use tech that's open source, but must be tech that's accessible to a local community already suffering from lack of resources.

Searching through transliterated text is equally frustrating giving the variety of standards combined with uneven "normalization" to ASCII for indexing. #teimec23

.@tillgrallert explains how there are 32 possible Unicode combinations for writing "Meccan" -- they all look the same to human eyes, but they don't coincide for computers! Searching becomes challenging or impossible. It often depends on the keyboard you have in front of you #teimec23

@toroe <notatedMusic> is meant to be a sort of an alternating element itself, though typically for providing a fallback. E.g. you can encode a pointer to an XML (<ptr>) and provide a link to an image (<graphic>) and a link to an audio file (<binaryObject>). I think <seg> could be treated similarly as one of the possible representations!

It was also discussed about how to indicate alternate encodings of a musical concept in the same document (e.g. a chord as written text, notated music and basso continuo in the same document). <choice> seemed also to me the way to go, but the TEI guidelines says that it is intended for "alternative encodings for the *same point* in a text", which would not make it perfectly suitable here.
