3 things about Benoît Delhomme’s MOTHERS’ INSTINCT

Mothers' Instinct 1. He justifies his behavior by complaining about "too many Mai Tais" the night before. 2. Conveniently labeled PHARMA-KAY. 3. Shakycam at the beach. Mounting a story with this many contrivances, there are only two fruitful approaches: frosty and clinical (like Haneke) or hothouse camp (Araki by way of Ozon). This film avoids either extreme and is a tonal mess, a "heartfelt" examination of grief one…

3 things about Steven Soderbergh’s SCHIZOPOLIS [1996]

1. Costa Rica.
2. “Huh. I wonder what that’s like.”
3. At gunpoint, he ejects the cassette and hands it over.

The image shows a person in a light blue dress shirt and a patterned tie, sitting in a bathroom with light gray tiled walls. The individual is looking intently at their wristwatch. To the right, there are several rolls of toilet paper stacked on a metal bar along the wall. The person appears focused, with a slightly furrowed brow and the setting suggests a public or office restroom.

3 things about Iain Softley’s HACKERS
[1995]

1. Pool on the roof.
2. To make a point he lifts his shirt and tweaks a nipple.
3. “I hope you don’t screw like you type.”

This movie has aged like a fine can of Jolt. Matthew Lillard MVP.

The image shows four young individuals grouped closely together in an indoor setting. The person on the left has dreadlocks and wears a colorful, patterned shirt while leaning slightly forward. The person in the center has short blond hair, a black leather jacket, and a calm expression. To their right is an individual with short dark hair, wearing a blue top and holding a white object in their hand. The person on the far right, wearing a white and black patterned shirt, has their hair tied back and a striped stick, possibly candy, protruding from their mouth. The background includes a window showing a nighttime cityscape, a partial clock on the wall, and framed pictures.

3 things about Gary Hustwit’s ENO [2024]

1. In the morning, delaying input (breakfast, reading the news, checking email) to give space to output (creative projects).
2. The unexpected utility of "Discreet Music" for a soundtrack to birthing.
3. Bowie and Eno unknowingly working at cross-purposes during the recording of “Moss Garden,” courtesy of Oblique Strategies.

The image shows a person operating a large sound mixing console in a recording studio. The individual is focused, with one hand adjusting the controls. Behind them, there are two large reel-to-reel tape machines, their distinctive circular spools visible. The surroundings are dimly lit, with various audio equipment scattered around, creating a sense of a busy, technical workspace. The person has light-colored hair and is wearing dark clothing.

3 things about Quentin Dupieux’s MANDIBLES [2020]

1. Duct-taping the trunk shut.
2. Dominique examines the dog.
3. A bunch of bananas.

#3things #movies #comedy #cinema

The image shows a large, oversized fly positioned on a bed inside a room. The fly's body is detailed with clear segments and prominently displayed large, reddish-brown eyes. It is positioned in the center of the bed, which is covered with rumpled white sheets and a pillow. In the background, there is a window framed with striped curtains, allowing natural light to softly illuminate the scene. On the left, blurred from focus, is a partial view of a human arm and a pillow with a yellowish cover.

3 things about Jeremy Workman’s SECRET MALL APARTMENT [2024]

1. An imposing facade without a pedestrian entrance.
2. Explaining tape art.
3. Two things had been stolen: their PlayStation, a photobook.

#3things #movies #documentaries #shopping #shoppingmalls #cinema

The image depicts a dimly lit living room with exposed concrete block walls. A plaid-patterned couch stretches across the right side of the room. Seated on the couch are two individuals, one holding a game controller and the other talking on a phone. In front of the couch, there is a wooden coffee table with an old-fashioned television set. On the left, a cushioned bench or small sofa is covered with a blanket, under which a figure is sleeping. A tall floor lamp beside the couch provides the main source of light, casting a warm glow over the scene. A large framed picture hangs on the far wall. A leafy plant is visible in one corner, adding a hint of greenery to the room.

3 things about John Cassavetes’ A CHILD IS WAITING

A Child Is Waiting 1. They watch Reuben from behind a two-way mirror as he sits at a literacy machine. It's lit like a police interrogation room. 2. "It's not what you can do for these children, it's what they can do for you." 3. He finds himself pulled into a game of football. You could argue that this is the most "conventional" film Cassavetes ever made, but that doesn't make it any less powerful or affecting.

Finally got to see the ENO documentary. Would love to see it again, but I can't. Because it's always different. And I love that. In this iteration, Laurie Anderson was only onscreen for like 20 seconds and it felt like a cruel tease.
