A short post calling for balance and reason when supporting sustainable energy. It simply boggles my mind that people shut down sustainable solutions in favor of unsustainable ones. Their modus operandi is always the same: energy ignorance.

@GregCocks awesome share thanks! RMP maps hydrogen infrastructure on the surface. These look like cool resources to learn more about subsurface H2.

A large lithium-ion battery fire at Moss Landing recently forced evacuations and has sparked industry-wide concerns about safety in energy storage systems. With the growing adoption of lithium-ion batteries, incidents like this highlight the urgent need for improved safety protocols and preventive measures. It's essential that the industry works together to reduce these risks for the safety of communities. Full story: respectmyplanet.org/publicatio

@icanbob This is the way. If you look at solar curtailment in California it is massive in April and May when production is highest and weather is mildest (i.e. no heating or cooling required). These are the times to bank energy. The curtailments break records as more and more solar capacity comes online. Interesting stuff Bob.

@kimon Respectfully disagree. If you assume every person in the world was as motivated as you to ramp up renwables and discontinue fossil fuel use, it would still take decades to switch over. But, there are people that dont even care, therefore it will take even more decades. Fossil fuel use 20 yrs ago was approx 82%. Fossil fuel use today is approx 82%. You dont have to support CCS, but it is to the detriment of GHG abatement regardless of your philosophical stance.

@kimon There is no faster or more economical way to reduce CO2 to atmosphere than CCS. Most people opposed to CCS are opposed because of an anti fossil fuel ideaology. But that ideaology doesn’t change the fact that the world uses primarily fossil fuels. Admit dependency and do something or deny dependency and do nothing. Those are the choices for people concerned about GHGs.

@icanbob It’s a good read and I can tell you are thinking of ways to benefit Ontario. Agree that electrolysis makes sense for Ontario’s wind. Bloom’s tech is interesting and benefits from pairing with waste heat. Can make 40% more H2 with same electrical input as low temp PEM. The article I published today mentions two Bloom projects: high temp directed solar SOEC in California and high temp nuclear waste heat SOEC in Minnesota.

Just published Sunday 1/12/25: RMP's comprehensive look at all hydrogen production locations in USA & Canada. This report details 225 locations making gray, brown, blue, green, brown, and pink hydrogen in traditional markets (Oil Refining & Ammonia) as well as emerging markets (Mobility & Power To Grid). If you're interested in how & for what & where H2 is produced, check it out.

@maugendre Would that include never buying solar panels or lithium-ion batteries bc China is the only source? It’s complicated, no?

RMP has added 133 new locations to our new Lithium-ion Battery Supply Chain Map. 110 of these locations are lithium mines (or prospects) and 23 are copper mines. RMP's map is now up to 664 locations. We are just getting started. Check it out.

@maugendre China has almost 1TW of coal power and they’re making all the world’s solar and batteries. Should we boycott Chinese solar and batteries until they stop using coal?

Check out this new post from RMP just published this morning taking on the misleading statement "almost all hydrogen is made from fossil fuels" as if hydrogen made over the past 100 years has anything to do with hydrogen's sustainable future. Hydrogen for energy is a brand new market and almost all FCEVs on California roads are refueled with 100% renewable hydrogen. Thank you for checking it out.

BMW recently tweeted about their hydrogen FCEV program on Threads. Did people say "hey that's great!". No, 100s of comments came bashing hydrogen with the same tired complaints which are misleading. Read this new post that takes on (with a little humor) this myth that making hydrogen is difficult compared to other energy mediums. Enjoy.

Just published today! RMP releases new map of North American Lithium-ion Battery Supply Chain. This post announces RMP's brand new map, the 7th in our library of interactive environmental maps. The map is based on NREL's NAATBatt database of upstream, midstream, and downstream assets in the lithium-ion battery supply chain. Learn more about the new map and the data that underpins it.

@Havant_Enviro @helenczerski @timsc Capturing carbon that would otherwise go to atmosphere is dodgy?
