it's hard to explain to people that software is a fundamentally communal activity because they're like "ohh you're a dev! you must be so smart!" and like. it literally does not matter how smart i am. none of this works at all unless we can collaborate across time and space.

#AndroidDev We just published the Toddler Tiles app on the Play Store at @snappmobile_io 🎉

I enjoyed a lot working on it and I learned how to:
- Use Compose
- Implement IAP
- Use Play Store console, etc.

We would be very happy if you would give it a try.

#Introduction
Hi there, I'm Quinn, a biomedical engineer turned mobile developer. Technical director at Small Planet, a digital agency in Brooklyn, where I've been building apps for over 12 years. I'm very easily distracted by shiny new things.

Current jams:
* Declarative UI
* Baked goods
* Reinforcement learning
* Cats (two torties allow us to live in their apt)
* Statecharts
* Dry Euro boardgames and red wine

"Please," said the man, "can you do magic to make me be kind?"
"No," said the witch. "Magic cannot change anyone's nature."
"So there is no hope for me?"
"You ask the wrong question. Kind is not something you are. It is what you do."
"Is it that simple?"
"It is that hard."

Look, if we're not here to yell compliments and encouragement at people we probably don't know in real life, what is the internet even for?

@lehtimaeki @tkuenneth @alsutton @evo @romannurik "Let's start from scratch in Kotlin" is a reasonable argument when the goal is to have a fun side project you can hack on in the tech you want. But the reasoning here was not that, it was some UX and missing features.

It's like Rust projects which always have to say "...written in Rust". My thought as a user is "but why?". Like, why do I care what it's written in?

2022-11-22

@lehtimaeki @tkuenneth @alsutton @evo @romannurik love the discussion! To bring things back around, this was my main point. IMHO the value of OSS is in the amount of collaboration, not the amount of choices. So I've always suggested that forking or rewriting should always be the last resort, compared to collaborating and contributing.

The week before Thanksgiving Twitter fires 4K workers, Amazon fires 10K workers, Facebook fires 11K workers, and Disney plans thousands of layoffs—all while US Billionaire pandemic wealth increased an absurd $1.7T.😳

A reminder that billionaires don’t create jobs—they exploit workers.

Tax billionaires. Unionize workers.

@r00tAdmin It's sad to see the lack of imagination that we've inherited from only one or two decades of BigTech owning everything. The idea of interconnected service providers and open protocols is unfathomable, so the only possible replacement is a smaller version of the proprietary walled garden.

To be fair, the author also seems to confuse "my Twitter bubble" with "everyone", so perhaps it's just him.

So I've moved!

I live at hachyderm.io now. Unfortunately, I can't recommend mastodon.cloud anymore. The typical user might not be able to navigate what I did. I'll explain in the next post behind a Content Warning, because it's not nice.

But new neighbours, what's good! 🙋🏿‍♂️
