Pleased to announce this exhibition about Type Archive founder Sue Shaw.

From her early career in publishing houses such as Faber & Faber, to setting up her own imprint (The Merrion Press) for the production of letterpress printed books of the highest standards, and her instrumental role in establishing and maintaining the Type Archive, the achievements of Sue Shaw (1932–2020) were plentiful.

These late nineteenth century posters have just been revealed during renovations at the Coach & Horses pub in Stoke Newington, but can anyone guess the missing words in the older signwritten letters beneath?

Posters printed by Bowles & Pope, who were at 76 & 47 Leadenhall St in the 1880s/early 1890s. The proprietor of the pub at that time was John Jones.

Wood-panelled wall with five letterpress printed posters pasted to it. They are old and well-worn, and advertise the prices of gin, brandy and port (x3). Across the middle portion of the wall is signwritten lettering that isn't completely visible, as per the text in the main post.Detail of the wood-panelled wall, and the signwritten lettering on it that can be read as '& Par___' with the latter part obscured by the bill poster.Detail of the price on one of the posters with a portion that has come away to reveal a lowercase 'e' in the signwriting beneath.

A great account of the noise and dirt of the hot-metal era, and the importance of its preservation.

The Type Archive was a complicated place but it was a simple observation from a guest that stayed with me and ended up inspiring the organisation of the book’s contents.

He commented that it was interesting to see how many materials a letter design passed through on its journey to the printed page.

The book is arranged by material – iron, steel, copper, bronze, brass, lead, wood, paper – tying the content together visually at first glance.

A beautiful book about the collections of the Type Archive is in the works.

‘Type Archived’ traces the origins of typography through the physical tools, objects and machinery that made the printed word possible.

Full of rich photography and detailed descriptions of artefacts, the book is currently funding tinyurl.com/muuz9u4s

Following the sad closure of the Type Archive in London last year I’m pleased to report that the story is not over. There are plans in the pipeline for ways to continue to share and celebrate the TA’s typographic treasures.

Unrealised project from 2019: The digital archiving of historic typographic matrices.

The idea was to use 3D scanning to create a digital archive of the Stephenson Blake matrices held at the Type Archive. By capturing the depth of letterforms (not just the face) the aim was firstly, to build an accessible online resource that explained the physical nature of typefounding, and secondly, to use this data to enable the fabrication of both new letterpress type and companion digital fonts.
