Just a quick announcement for #Mindly.Social users regarding Threads and Meta's change in moderation policies:

As of 01/20/2025, Mindly.Social has limited Threads which will hide content from their service in public feeds while letting our users still follow and interact with people on that platform. This seems like the best compromise since we have users following over 600 accounts on Threads and a full defederation would prevent them from interacting with those users entirely. Our users have the ability to completely block them if they'd like to for their individual account and if we start getting any reports or start seeing any heinous content we may completely suspend the instance (as we would any other instance).

Apologies for the outage some of you may have been experience. We had a caching issue which caused the website to appear offline in browsers who didn't have the site cached before which ended up being a permission issue.

This has been resolved now and #MindlySocial should work on all browsers (mobile and desktop) at this time.

Hey #MindlySocial, I've made some backend changes to the infrastructure to remove some complexity so if you find anything not working or slower than normal please let @KuJoe know.

Thanks!

Sorry for not posting a lot of updates on this account lately.

Just wanted to share with everybody that we've increased the character limit from 500 to 1500 after many requests.

Keep in mind that some apps and services might still have a 500 character limit, but the web client now supports up to 1500 per post.

If you have any questions or comments about this change feel free to ping @KuJoe directly to discuss this.

@markgrieveson that 172.64.80.1 IP is Cloudflare so that definitely looks like the culprit here. I'll be looking for a suitable alternative that plays better with Mastodon.

@pachli @markgrieveson Thanks for pointing this out. I've disabled as much of the security features within Cloudflare that I can so please let me know if you still encounter issues Mark and I can dig into the logs further (if you can provide an error and a timestamp it would be helpful).

Additionally, the status page checks the services every 60 seconds or so, but only from a single server located elsewhere so it's not the most accurate, but it's "good enough". 😅

@divergence001 I don't believe so. Last I heard the Mastodon devs are looking at how to add that feature but there are some obstacles in their way.

#MindlySocial has been upgraded to Mastodon 4.3.0

Everything appears to be working properly but please report any issues you might experience. Thanks!

Additionally it appears that uploading large image files no longer fails. If you continue having problems uploading large images please let me know.

Made some performance tweaks this morning that I wasn't aware of so hopefully #MindlySocial is running better.

I'm still working to figure out the issue with uploading large files, which will be resolved in a future update but there's no ETA on that so looking into workarounds.

@wanderinghermit When you go to this post what does it look like for you? Can you take a screenshot?

@wanderinghermit I'm not seeing a thread by Ricki Tarr in that example. When I view the reply I can see the reply and the original post by Ricki Tarr. If I click on the original post, I can see all of the replies to that post but I don't see any thread (replies from Ricki Tarr to their original post).

Can you confirm that the example is indeed a thread from Ricki Tarr?

I've attached a screenshot of what I'm seeing.

@wanderinghermit Can you link me to one of their posts within a long thread as an example so I can see if there's a disconnect somewhere on our end?

I know #MindlySocial has been unstable most of the day on and off but this should be almost done now.

Right now everything for me to fix is fixed and the last things are some basic maintenance tasks that should not interfere with anything too drastic.

If your home feed is broken/outdated, this will be fixed by tomorrow (ETA 12 hours).

Searches may be incomplete, this should be fixed eventually (ETA is blank, 164300764 total indexes to build at a speed of ~400/s).

Apologies again for today! 🥺

@Is_reality_a_necessity It should be back up. We had some database issues this morning and the backlog is still catching up, but everything appears to be stable for now.

Sorry for the #MindlySocial downtime this morning.

Last night our database server had some issues so the database was migrated to a new server which took roughly 7 hours to perform.

We'll be looking into a solution that will hopefully avoid lengthy outages in the future when it comes to the database.

At this time everything should be good to go, timelines might take a while to update as we wait for other servers to resend data from during the outage.

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

I'm sure this has been posted quite a bit already, but if you're annoyed by the current wave of automated spam you can block the notifications in your Preferences.

Preferences -> Notifications -> Other Notification Settings

Check either (or both):
Block notifications from non-followers
Block notifications from people you don't follow

We just released critical security patches for versions 4.1, 4.2, nightly, and the already discontinued 3.5 and 4.0.

If you are using nightly, you can upgrade to the `4.3.0-nightly.2024-02-02-security` tag to get the patch.

Please upgrade as soon as possible!

#MindlySocial has been upgraded to Mastodon v4.2.5

This is a security patch so nothing should have changed from a user perspective, but please report any issues you experience.
