This is Daphnis, one of Saturn's moons. This image shows its unusual gravitational effect on Saturn's rings ...

Daphnis is only about 8 km wide, but its gravity disturbs Saturn's A ring, creating ripples and edge waves. It orbits within the Keeler Gap, a 42 km-wide gap in the rings. This image shows how even small moons can shape massive ring systems.

⬇️ It's a render from 2016 by Kevin Gill. Lots of discussions in the replies.

New blog post! "Load store conflicts", in which we look at some performance sensitive code that has surprisingly dramatic performance swings based on the compiler and the microarchitecture used. Boosts appreciated!

@codinghorror Objection, your honor. Shortening texts, yes. Summarize, nor even on student level, as I have experienced multiple times. Summarizing is craftsmanship. Don’t believe me, believe them: ea.rna.nl/2024/05/27/when-chat or pivot-to-ai.com/2025/02/11/ai-

I once worked at a company that sold industry-specific core-business software to deep-pocketed corps who couldn’t / wouldn’t / shouldn’t roll their own. I got into a discuss with my manager about whether our products were essentially — my words — a hoax.

Me: “Look, our products are riddled with bugs and holes. They’re nearly impossible to deploy, manage, and maintain. They frequently don’t even work •at all• on the putative release date, and we sell the mop-up as expensive ‘consulting.’”

For people regularly speaking at (programming) conferences. How do you figure out when a conference opens their submission process? I have a talk I gave at an internal conference and so many people asked me to present it at other venues. But somehow I have a hard time figuring out when to submit my abstract. The talk is also available here youtu.be/IVgmLe25aPI?si=H0myvI. Looking for conference in/close to the Netherlands

@elmowilk would love to see a bigger picture, really curious how it looks. But with the video compression here it's almost impossible to see the difference.

@jacobras heel herkenbaar! Met hobbies ben ik minder streng voor mijzelf. Maar dat gaat dan ook vaak niet goed. Maar het is natuurlijk wel leuk om af en toe gewoon opnieuw te beginnen.

Slang shading language and tooling is now a Khronos project (was an nvidia project for past umpteen years). This is exciting! GLSL seems to be frozen with no future, whereas Slang is not only actively developed, but also brings in a lot of language features that sound useful. Nice! shader-slang.com/blog/2024/11/
