I just published a blog post arguing that the reform movements for research assessment and scientific publishing need to better align their agendas. This is crucial for the success of both movements.
Managing Director of Research Consulting. I help universities, funders, publishers and not-for-profits manage, disseminate and deliver impact from research.

Since 2016 or so I spend Saturday mornings doing 'professional volunteer work'. Writing reviews of articles and grant proposals, recommendation letters, that sort of thing. You know, the tasks that don't fit in the regular work week, and cannot be charged to a project budget, but are nice to do.
Usually these things serve only one or at best a handful of people. [1/6]
Delighted to see our new report for cOAlition S on 'Towards Responsible Publishing' released today, there are a wealth of insights into #scholcomm to be found in our findings, all fully open and reusable:

Scientific publishing is at a crossroads. To coincide with #FEBS2024, I explore the potential for three alternative models to disrupt the status quo: 1. Funder Platforms 2. Publish, Review, Curate 3. Deconstructed Publishing

@MKarhulahti the salary costs in the chart are for in-house staff undertaking roles as shown below, rather than editorial roles. Editorial costs are included in the article production costs and are much less significant. The avg. cost per full-time staff member in STM publishing is in the region of €100k including social security and on-costs, so this is where a lot of the money goes. PLOS (a non-profit) has even higher costs per person - c.€120k/FTE - as they're paying San Francisco salaries.
@MKarhulahti €38 an hour for an editor, €29 for a production editor. This assumes outsourcing of these activities but keep in mind there is no traditional journal editor in the ORE model (in a gate keeping sense). For a full breakdown of costs see the model here: https://zenodo.org/records/10210989
@brembs Ubiquity could certainly handle the article production and their charges would be at the lower end of my assumptions for this activity. But this leaves ORE reliant on a commercial enterprise (Ubiquity were acquired by De Gruyter a couple of years ago), whereas the aim is to develop a self-sufficient, not-for-profit infrastructure. This aim brings with it a whole set of costs that go well beyond article production.
‘Not-for-profit scholarly publishing might not be cheaper - And that’s OK’. My new post on the cost of publishing is out today on the LSE Impact blog. #openaccess #scholcomm
