@DeltaWye @researchbuzz @ai6yr I don't know if it's been studied, but combining a gender study on sense of direction in rats and some recall studies on the cause of higher retention from analog versus digital books, I suspect that screen based simulations are not as effective as real life experiences for building intuition and direction skills.

I think it would be an interesting study, can you use computer simulations to teach map skills effectively? What brain regions are active in both?

@DeltaWye @researchbuzz @ai6yr in past generations more people had an innate sense of direction and were exposed to maps in everyday life, remember Thomas Guides? With the adoption of navigation systems in cars we have reduced those skills. Activities that were common 30 years ago, like hanging out in malls, could teach you how to read a map and give and follow directions have been replaced with online activities.

Perhaps as VR improved we'll see some of those skills returning via gaming.

@waltman iced Americanos are actually cheaper and higher quality (less chance of ending to with a mouthful of coffee grounds) than Starbucks iced coffee.

@SRLevine try pressing the start button three times within a second. (Varies by model.)

Without a pod it should spin up but not pump water.

@SRLevine @h2onolan "(why do people buy this type of coffee maker...)"

After my (free to me) Keurig died I swore I would never purchase another pod machine again. However I found that Nespresso had the best combination of ease of use and environmental friendliness.

Taste is subjective, I enjoy the wide variety of flavors and the ability to easily make espresso like coffee for both hot and cold drinks. I bought a second machine for my classroom and I take it with me on road trips.

@slashdot "The editorial argued that widespread AI use in coursework undermines the broader educational mission of developing critical thinking skills and character formation, particularly in humanities subjects. " This is a false narrative. If the work can be completed by AI it could be completed by any proxy (machine or human.)

Much of the work doesn't have anything to do with critical thinking, it's about parroting the instructors' opinion.

@lauren @John @ai6yr I can't get the image out of my head so here it is:

Scene, front entrance to the Colosseum. A laborer is on an old ladder changing a sign. The sign reads, in Latin, "Days without an impalement." The worker is removing tiles from the right hand side of a very long roman numeral. The sign has clearly been extended to the left many times.

(Yes, I realize that MMMCMXCIX is about it and there is no zero to replace it, but that just makes it funnier to me.)

@ai6yr can't we get RFK to handle this?

I've been looking for open source replacements for my home automation, this doorbell project seems interesting. One thing that I'm confused about is the point of having a display on a doorbell.

hackster.io/news/the-fusion-ch

In the link site for ordering the parts, they showed display that says, "Please don't ring bell, baby sleeping" but I can't help but think it's more reliable to actually disable the bell if that's your concern.

Ideas?

@rysiek @panoptykon if we can't decide these issues, what is pornographic content and does it have to be the purpose of the site?

Could we blacklist the entire Internet unless you were age verified. And then could we somehow allow parents to whitelist specific sites for their children but still do it anonymously?

@rysiek @panoptykon I enjoyed reading that write up, it clearly laid out your system.

But, age is (and has been used) as a proxy. Should you be able to drive at 16? Certainly age isn't really the best measure for this, but it's easy to implement.

Maybe we should be trying to unravel what we're really after when we do age verification and try to implement that instead (more of a legal question enabled by technology than a technology question.)

@gking don't be sad to see it go, the intent of closing it is that we can find active communities that exist that will provide a better experience.

I'm a little sad that I couldn't make something happen, but I actually knew that fairly early on when I saw that the people I most wanted weren't leaving Twitter and Facebook.

It's been hard leaving Facebook, I get sucked back in doing favors for people, but I've started deleting my data and I am almost gone.

@iFixit In 2025 and on the Fediverse I thought we were beyond pimping out our friends for a few dollars in merch. I won't do it and I hope others won't do it to me.

I, for one, don't care about your follower count or your attempt to monetize social media.

Oh, it's also earth day. How much plastic are you using to make these kits anyway? I love the concept of fixing stuff, but sustainability starts when you by tools.
