Scrantic

Geek and techie for 25+ years working in NFP/NGO's. Not so much time to tinker and experiment these days with personal projects but my passions now lie with #cybersecurity #threatintel.

I long for the days of a simpler web without interference from META, X etc.., I cut my teeth on IRC and self built website world of the 90's constantly breaking and fixing things and making friends around the world.

Outside of Tech I love #hiking #walking #dogs #gardening #cooking #livemusic and live #comedy when I've got a chance.

I am once again asking companies to not be absolute shitbags about their data breach disclosures, such as deliberately blocking search engines from seeing the page by using a "noindex" tag in its HTML.

Today's edition: Australian airline Qantas.

My story: techcrunch.com/2025/07/02/qant

a screenshot showing Qantas' official cyber incident page, which contains information for customers about its recent data breach. The screenshot contains the "inspector" view, showing the web page's source code as containing a "noindex" tag, preventing search engines (and anyone searching for the page) from finding it.

I'm not very good at asking people to pay for the Sizzle, which is dumb because it's great /and/ great value.

Each day, I send you the top tech stories, deals and some fun stuff. That's it!

And, until EOFY, I'm giving new subs 20% off off (literally $4/month)

Citrix Netscaler customers - keep calm and patch CVE-2025-5777 from Tuesday.

It allows unauth memory reads, has similarities to CitrixBleed (CVE-2023-4966) as may allow session token theft.

“The fact that [Russian threat actors] have put such enormous effort into trying to read my mail — and apparently blown an entirely new and unsuspected method of doing so in the process — is a compliment and an endorsement that I am doing the right thing,” Giles told Recorded Future News via text.

When Ross Ulbricht received a mystery $31 million bitcoin donation Saturday, some guessed he was sending himself old Silk Road profits.

Crypto tracers now tell me they suspect a much stranger source for the money: a vendor from the defunct dark web market AlphaBay. wired.com/story/ross-ulbricht-

In Chrome:

ThreeDots -> Settings, then choose "Search Engine"

Click "Add" next to "Site Search"

Enter Name: "Google Search without AI"
Shortcut: "noai"
URL with %s in place of query: {google:baseURL}search?q=-ai%20%s&{google:RLZ}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:language}{google:prefetchSource}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:contextualSearchVersion}ie={inputEncoding}

(that URL does the same thing as the regular Google search, but it prefixes the query with "-ai")

Click "Save"

In the ThreeDots menu next to your newly created search engine in the list: Select "Make Default".

There you go: 30 seconds of work, and now Chrome will do Google searches without showing AI results.

You're welcome.

The "Edit search engine" modal dialog, with fields filled out.
The URL is copy-pasted from the "Google" search engine, then amended to add "-ai%20" before %s.

After last month's CVE funding crisis, I started talking to experts on what went wrong and what's ahead.

By the end of my interviews, I learned that a chief rival to the CISA-funded MITRE-run program, the CVE Foundation, thinks it can have a CVE database not dependent on the US government up and running by December, with the support of dozens of private sector companies and four non-US governments.

Check out my latest CyberScoop piece. Thanks to Sasha Romanosky, Peter Allor, Jerry Gamblin, Ben Edwards, Jay Jacobs and Michael Roytman for their insight.
