@kristoffer @obrhoff Yep. It leads to feed bloat. Once your feed becomes unwieldy you stop looking at it, or you only skim it. It's better to build a very intentional, highly curated feed that you enjoy and prune it along the way. Rather than just dumping hundreds of follows in there and trying to figure out what is good and what isn't. You could argue that what you've built is hardly a "social graph" if the "followers" you've gained aren't looking at what you post anyways because they've junked up their non algo-timeline to such a degree that they default to their algorithmic timeline which will never feed them your posts.

@neurovagrant @hrbrmstr A long time back I had a job where I would drive to a slug lot 10m away, slug in to Alexandria (Franconia metro) where I would hop on the metro to a bus stop, then take a bus which would lead me to anotehr 10m walk to my office building. I was an intern. It seemed very normal to me at the time. That commute was probably 2h each day both ways. I was being paid like 15/h or something for that.

@dumpsterqueer 100%. Everything on my site (images and text) is pure human-made. I really hate seeing that AI garbage on blog posts too. Instant un-follow because it makes me wonder about the provenance of the text in the post too...

@kristoffer @obrhoff Theres more engagement here because the people here WANT to be here. They make a purposeful decision to follow you and be a part of it all. On Bsky, it's algorithms, starter packs, everyone trying to "get followers", blah blah. Normal toxic social media stuff. It's better here because it's organic - it's human. Folks have a hard time understanding that at first, or from the outside, because all they've known for so long is Twitter or Bsky-style "socializing" (if that's what you want to call it). All about virality, vanity, voidposting, ragebaiting, influencing, and worse tbh. It's just better here.

@User47 I personally don't mind seeing bsky stuff here. I follow a few accounts through the brdgy bridge which is a nice native-ish experience and when people share links to bsky posts they appear like any other URL would (e.g. to a blog post or something). Sometimes interesting stuff happens outside Fedi and I see no reason why it's bad to share those things here. I'd hate to see this place become so insular that we chase off anything not Fedi-bourne.

That said... it's not like I don't draw the line somewhere. I mean I don't want to see X/twitter links, because I think it's just embarassing for whoever is posting it (and says something unsavory about them).

Also, if someone is posting stuff you don't like, either because of the content, or because of its origin...just unfollow? Or mute?

Anyways. Fedi is the best, and the overwhelming majority of what I see here is FROM fedi (and i follow a fair amount of people overall). Cheers! 👍

@ozoned @gotosocial I wrote a bit about #GoToSocial, how I'm using it and how I'm hosting it here for anyone interested in reading https://shellsharks.com/notes/2025/01/10/gotosocial-on-knt-host

@jcrabapple @mdmrn It's called wisdom. 😄

But seriously. Was just discussing buying a bird feeder so I can watch more birds as I sit on the porch in my rocking chair. Oh yeah and I just got into gardening. Middle-age comes at ya fast...

I'm sorry, but this pontificating about the importance of decentralization on Medium, a notably NOT-decentralized platform, is something I find astoundingly frustrating

Is this what we call cognitive dissonance?

@jcrabapple But legit. When I first heard "provider" I was NOT into it at all. That song has definitely grown on me the most. So much chills. The whole album is an obsession. 🦩

@jcrabapple Yeah but when that math rock riff hits...

@beep I'd liken my CSS to the seventh circle of hell, a.k.a. "violence".

@mariajeperez @shellsharks A week or so ago I had posted a bunch of "I've got a blog, now what?" recommendations, but never quite got around to PESOS-ing it back to my site. Well I've fixed that now. Check it out! All in one place now...
