Way back in 1995 when we wrote the first edition of our textbook, we went out on a limb and included a section on RPC in the chapter on transport protocols, in an effort to make the case that there was more to transport protocols that the reliable byte-stream service offered by TCP. 28 years later we are still having the debate and some people still get very upset that the answer to every transport problem might not be TCP.
