Scotland made buses free for under 23s and it's driven record attendance at soccer games and a decade+ reduction in average age of attendees.
Free public transport has huge ramifications for society and the economy.

I asked #Google a straight question and got an ever-so-straight answer. So that's settled: I'll be smearing #Vegemite all over my face next time I'm in #Australia.
@Tattooed_Mummy Definitely more exciting eggs than chickens, though iirc they're annual so the 42 I get a week from my hens are probably still more useful.
Wouldn't have to worry about a fox getting the emu though, and they look awesome...
🤔
News i just found out about.
You do not need a licence to own a pet emu in the UK.
Game changer
@light @dentangle @revk @neil because when you are a woman you often grow up with the idea that there are things that you shouldn't do, don't suit you, or you're simply not allowed to do. And you learn to see yourself as a woman first, and then as a person with skills and interests. At least this was the case for me.
I think that seeing more women in panels can make you (and your parents/educators) think that yes, women can be in a panel if they have the skills and interests
Yup.
“… effects of generative #AI are likely to mirror broader trends of job transformation already unfolding today, namely de-skilling and surveillance.”
“outputs could substitute for …workers with average levels of competence”
“the likely outcome of the generative AI boom will not be mass joblessness, but a worsening of work conditions”
“reflects the priorities of firms seeking to lower costs, discipline workers, and consolidate profits”

@light @neil @dentangle @revk I am a person with skills, knowledge, interests, etc.
When I work on a project, it is primarily that mix that I want to bring, the domain knowledge that is forefront of my mind, and the directly relevant skills I bring to bear.
But time and again, in male-dominated industries like law and software, the fact that I'm a woman has been held against me.
For example, I've been pulled up on saying something in a slightly harsh tone, when nobody said anything about or to the man who shouted and hit the table.
I've been talked over and ignored, only to see a man listened to for saying the same thing.
I've been questioned by my boss about having "lots" of medical appointments after a regular review of my hormonal contraceptives.
How can I leave my gender out of it when other people don't?
@Yorkshiregeek I also started it a little while back, and got bored of running back and forward. Not sure whether to persist or not
And this article from Sarah Creighton who NI Twitterers will know, is worth reading.
“If women in Northern Ireland rioted every time one of us was attacked, the country would lie in ashes.”
September 15th will be the 30th anniversary of the release of the film "Hackers".
Not the best plot, but I love the music, the aesthetic, the sheer enjoyment the characters get from their computers and the net.
The day before is a Sunday, so a good day to re-watch it :)
@hackaday Love it, and this isn't far off my chicken door experience either. One day I'll blog my setup, though mines definitely more of a MacGyver

I often chuckle when I hear Christian Nationalists say that America needs to be a "nation of Christian values." Clearly, they're not thinking about the values in Matthew 25:31-46:
"Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’
And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’"

@mkelly @sldrant @nivrig @stuart The difference with pair programming is your partner will say "I'm not sure" and you go check, whereas AI is scarily confident even when outright wrong. You can also have a real conversation based in logic with a person, and AI has no logic or reasoning so is a poor partner for discussion
@mkelly @sldrant @nivrig @stuart I agree with you. They're potentially helpful as a senior when you know the issues in the generated code, but as a junior you won't know these things.
They real do turn you job in a reviewer, and as someone else said that is "a job humans famously enjoy and are good at"... 😔
Ed Sheeran has two of the top ten most played songs on Spotify ever globally. That's 20%. I think he's great but I'm always surprised at the breadth of his popularity. An extremely, extremely weird speciality of being British when you're singing and people letting it happen.
