@ljwrites Ty!
A few pics from my Du Bois lecture in Berlin on the 4th of July: “Coercion and Autonomy in Samuel R. Delany’s Stars”
Y’know, I haven’t been active on here in a moment, but Mastodon really is the only real microblogging/text-based app I would want to use. Hope you’ve all been doing well!
Twitter: I follow news and political giants, but all I see are bad people and arguments
Bluesky: I follow 10% of my old friends who were able to get out of twitter in time and sometimes it works
Threads: I follow my friends but I can’t see them through the algorithm of businesses
Mastodon: oh look a beekeeper in the Netherlands
Davarian Baldwin: "We throw away higher education at our own expense." / Abolition at the university = redirecting its resources towards the communities who live in the actual places that host our universities and marginalized people within its walls. He proposes ARIS in place of DEI: Abolition, Reparations, Investment, Security. #focwg23 #highered #abolition #dei #socialjustice #antiracism
Faculty of Color Working Group symposium off to a wonderful start with a keynote by Prof. Lorgia Garcia Peña. "We must insist on community as an action, as a verb…" #focwg23
Tmw your grad school colleague wins a #Pulitzer. Always been in awe of Andrea Chu’s meteoric rise. Massive congrats to her!
@ianhunt sure!
Good interview with Priyamvada Gopal on the anti-monarchy protests. Helpful to know what's happening on the ground in the UK.

Found out today that I've been accepted into the Diversity Scholars Network hosted by the National Center for Institutional Diversity at UMich. So glad that there's growing institutional support both for faculty of color in US academia, as well as for engaged fields of research, such as queer studies, postcolonial studies and ethnic studies!
Excellent article on the bill to eliminate tenure now wending its way through the Texas legislature. Kudos to the Texas Tribune for explaining exactly how tenure works.

@cavar thank you!!
A Day of Two Teach-Ins: Stevens and NYU #FreedomToLearn gatherings as part of the National Day of Action against the censorship of AP African American Studies, school curricula, and the banning of books across the US (we learned today that there have been some failed initiatives in parts of New Jersey too). @litstudies
@RudyDoesBooks Drop by our panel if you do!!
@krisnelson it really is the most tasteful one out there so far!
Woohoo! Our panel—Bodily Autonomy and Reproduction in Speculative Fiction—was accepted for this year's American Studies Association conference! Montreal in the Fall! 🏙️🍂 #speculativefiction #sciencefiction #reproductiverights #literature #americanstudies #asa2023 #montreal @litstudies
Just installed a new Mastodon app, Mammoth, and I like it so far! Seems like they’ve given design and layout a lot of thought (something I’ve found lacking in some of the other apps).
@gregspooner @litstudies We actually talked about it in our interview. It was probably left out because of space constraints!
I was interviewed by my former NYU colleague Tyler Harper (now a professor in Maine) for this BBC Culture piece on climate fiction. I'm by no means a 'post-critique' adherent, but I do think we, i.e. literary scholars, tend to overplay the immediate political effect of novels—and Tyler makes some good points!
