SOC-MISC

Social Inequalities in the Risk and Aftermath of Miscarriage (SOC-MISC).

An ERC Starting Grant funded project analysing the social inequalities in the risk and consequences of miscarriage in Finland, France, and the UK lead by @heinivaisanen

The project aims to:
1. develop methodologies to study miscarriage
2. examine social inequalities in miscarriage risk
3. study social inequalities in health consequences of miscarriage
4. compare these results between areas/countries.

The preliminary results presented indicate that miscarriages are more comprehensively included in self-reported sources (surveys, ante-natal appointments) than in healthcare registers, but both types resources have their pros and cons depending on the research questions we're asking.

7 demographers and 2 doctors met at the headquarters of Ined to discuss about msicarriage. The workshop was organised by the SOC-MISC project's team.

What is captured/missing in administrative registers ? How to detect miscoding between miscarriages, abortions, stillbirths ?
Administrative records, clinical studies, and surveys each capture different aspects of miscarriage - and miss others. What can we learn by triangulating these approaches?

How do we ask about pregnancy loss sensitively yet accurately? How are miscarriage questions understood by respondents? How do question framing, sequencing and contextual definitions impact reporting of miscarriage experiences in surveys?

The discussion starts with definitions of miscarriage. It is difficult to establish a standard and universal definition of a miscarriage. Many different pregnancy experiences might be classified as miscarriage.

1 in 4 pregnancies end in a #miscarriage which has implications on fertility intentions, mental & physical health.

The SOC-MISC project studies social inequality in miscarriage and its outcomes, lead by P.I. @heinivaisanen funded by the #ERC.

The host institution is INED, partners are University of Helsinki, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, and University of St Andrews.

This indicates the differences observed among all study participants were largely due to the propensity to get #pregnant at different stages of the life course.

However, due to underreporting of #abortion and misreporting of #miscarriage more methodological work is needed to confirm the results.

The first SOC-MISC publication is out!

@heinivaisanen and Katherine Keenan used the BCS70 data to study socioeconomic inequalities in miscarriage risk.

Summary of results 👇, see link for full article.

Among all women less advantaged SES was associated with a higher risk of #miscarriage during adolescence and early 20s, but it reversed around mid-30s. If only pregnant people were studied, SES was not associated with the risk.

🎬 Powerful representations matter.

In Severance (Apple TV+), Episode 7, actress Dichen Lachman portrays Gemma's miscarriage experience.

By highlighting this intimate moment, the show brings much-needed visibility to pregnancy loss.

Lachman shared: "It's more common than people admit or talk about. It's one of those things that just isn't in the conversation. It's something that a lot of women feel like they go through alone."

We are excited to share our latest research: "Social patterns of miscarriage reporting and risk: Insights from survey data in France."

This preprint examines how miscarriages are reported in surveys and explores miscarriage risk factors using data from the French FECOND study. Our findings offer new insights into reproductive health disparities and data collection challenges.

A new very interesting paper by Alessandro Di Nallo showing a decline in physical health for up to two years after a miscarriage or a stillbirth in the UK and calling for more research aiming to understand the underlying mechanism.
