Patrick Heckenlively

I have worked in the IT industry since the mid 1990's. I currently work as an SRE for a small startup. As my handle suggests, I am a fan of the Go programming language.

Oh, and I have both a BS and MS in Mathematics.

@kev the answer is “it depends. I use Linux, windows, and Mac on a daily basis.

@Ab5al0m For me, it came down to a choice between Vivity and Toric. Vivity also comes in a Toric option as well. Since I had Lasik roughly 20 years ago, I was told the Vivity might not be as effective for me. Even with just the Toric IOL, I only need +1 readers to see my computer screens.

@Ab5al0m Interesting. The three main multifocal IOL options I found were PanOptix, Symfony, and Vivity. PanOptix and Symfony use concentric circles to provide the different focal lengths. This causes halo effects at night with car headlights. The Vivity causes far fewer halos, but it gives less near vision. All the multifocal IOLs cause some degradation in contrast.

@Ab5al0m @walgreens There are a lot of options. I did quite a bit of research before my initial appointment. Insurance typically covers just monofocal IOLs. If you have astigmatism, you will still have it with just the monofocal IOL. Neither the monofocal, nor the toric will give you close up vision (without reading glasses). For that, there are multifocal IOL options, but they come with trade-offs. At the end of the day, you can't cheat Physics.

@Ab5al0m @walgreens The surgery went well. I opted to spend the extra $$ to have a toric intraocular lens implanted to also fix my astigmatism. I'm seeing really well now with the right eye. I'm eagerly waiting till I get my left eye done on 12/13.

@Ab5al0m @walgreens thanks. You too. As my dad used to say, “Getting old sucks! But it beats the alternative.”

@walgreens @Ab5al0m I definitely missed that in your post. In my defense I’m actually having the first of two cataract surgeries this morning. 🙃

@walgreens @Ab5al0m That URL does not appear to have a TLD in what would be the domain name. This makes me think it is a relative URL to another URL. Some malicious email can compromise your computer just by opening the email, particularly, if you use Outlook as your mail client.

@Ab5al0m @walgreens I usually just use curl to explore dodgy links. 🙃

@Ctechdiva @shanselman Any windoze instance that I run get's WSL installed. I also make Ubuntu my default shell in Windows Terminal.

@anton You can also install vscode natively on Ubuntu in WSL2, now that GUI apps work on Win 11.

Gorgeous JWST image of the Pillars of Creation, taken with the Mid-Infra Red Instrument.
Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI

From NASA’s Flickr page: Three prominent pillars of semi-opaque gas and dust, each in spectral shades of gray-blue, start at the bottom left and reach toward the top right. From left to right, each pillar is consecutively smaller. Together, they appear like a ghostly hand. Towards the top of the leftmost pillar, there is one prominent red star, with tiny spikes at its tip. Lower on this pillar, there are several darker areas of dust that jut out like protrusions, some also with stars that appear as small red dots. The other two pillars are below and to the right of the first pillar. The background of this scene takes on glowing shades of orange-red mixed with black, with the strongest bright orange hues dipping into a V shape at the top center of the image. Scattered throughout the image are a few dozen tiny bright white and blue stars. Larger stars appear like red orbs and are embedded in the pillars.
